Customer Reviews 10 Customer Reviews Average 4.3 out of 5 Lee S Just purchased a S&W 500 Magnum. Looked it over thoroughly and is the quality I expect of a S&W revolver. I have owned many over the years and I have yet to be disappointed. The fit and finish is superb. Double action trigger pull is smooth and linear, single action is crisp and light, about 4lbs, give or take. My only disappointment was that the gun shop was out of all S&W 500 ammo and I didn't get a chance to test fire it, what a bummer!!! 8 months ago Randy R The 4" barrel M500 is probably the best-handling of the series. The gun feels neutrally balanced in the hand compared to its longer barreled siblings which tend to strain the wrist unless one practices diligently with them to develop the hand and forearm strength needed to handle these heavyweights.
I already own the 6.5" model and while it makes a wonderful field back-up, it's just a bit large for urban use. The 4" on the other hand is perfect for general carry and can be belt carried easily. The size of the cartridges can make loading awkward, but the use of speedloaders really enhances the practical use of the M500.
Fit and finish is contemporary Smith & Wesson, and function is superb. I note that the new 4" model has the same fluid double-action pull as my 6.5" and the same, very light, crisp, zero movement single-action letoff that makes it easy to hit well with these big guns as long as one can avoid anticipating the shot.
Anyone who claims the .500 magnum has no practical use is either speaking from ignorance, or deliberately trying to mislead others, but this was the same back when the now-eclipsed .44 magnum was king. The M500 4" provides the discerning individual with an exreme level of power in a completely manageable, portable, and yes, "compact" package. Anyone going into back-country areas where attack by dangerous animals is possible should seriously consider 4" .500 magnum. 10 months ago Show More Reviews...
