Tales of the Great Stag follow him from the Orient and the Middle East to Europe, from ancient beliefs to early Christianity. A few details remain constant in every thing. The stag appears carrying the sun within his massive antlers. He is first glimpsed by mighty men - great warriors or tribal leaders. The mighty men follow him to a faraway land filled with game and fertile ground. Some cultures near the Arctic regions applied this legend to the absence of the sun in winter and its return in the spring, said to be carried by the Great Stag. He is apart of a vision, seen in eastern Europe, in which burning candles at the tips of his antlers surrounded the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. Wherever he appeared, he led the way to hope and prosperity.
