You're going to have a hard time finding a better bolt gun at this price. I put a Night Force on this rifle and have been getting groups under one MOA at 100 yards. I wasn't sure about the triangle barrel when I purchased it online, but it looks pretty cool without trying to look flashy. The trigger, stock, and bipod are good as well, especially for the price.
If you are looking for your first bolt gun, I recommend the VTR.

This gun shoots. I bought my son one in .308, and it has shot 10-15 big game animals in 2 years out to 600 yds. Everyone borrows and shoots that gun to fill their tag. It never misses. It's like magic. At 100 yds it shoots ragged hole groups with factory ammo (Hornady).
Soooo, I got sick of using his gun and bought my own in .308 (disappointed my 80-year-old Dad when I told him I bought a gun that wasn't 30.06). Guess what? It shoots too! It shoots better than .5 MOA right out of the box with factory ammo (Core-Lokt for mine). Minimal recoil- Just don't be sitting anywhere near that thing without ear plugs (that's a very serious piece of advice).
I wouldn't want to carry it for more than a couple miles, it's a bit heavy, but confidence is king, and I have a lot of confidence in this gun.

A superb rifle for the money. You can spend a lot more, but not exceed the accuracy. I have shot dime sized groups of three at 100 yards. Adjustable trigger is equally an attractive feature.

First impression upon receiving the Remington 700 VTR at my FFL was that the rifle needed a good cleaning and lube. There was a brass ring mark on the bolt face (I assume from being test fired), and a very slight amount of surface rust on the edges of the lettering "Remington Arms Company" on the barrel. Both came off easily with some Rem oil and a toothbrush. Since the rust concerned me a bit, I removed the barreled action an did a more thorough cleaning and inspection of the parts hidden by the stock. I did not find any other rust and everything was as it should be. With proper lubrication the bolt cycled as you expect from a Remington 700, smooth as glass. Features included in this package that are typically extra - muzzle break, bipod, picatinny rail, and oversized bolt handle. I appreciate the rail in particular, because this is typically a hidden cost required to get he rifle operating. The triangular barrel appears to be a similar bull barrel from other Remington varmint/tactical rifles, but machined smooth on three sides to form a triangle. My impression is that this saves some weight as compared to a bull barreled 700 SPS, for example. Now the best part, the range report. I finally took it out to the range today, an man this thing is very accurate. I mounted a bore sighted an old 4-12x44 scope I had around and right from jump this rifle was grouping moa or better at 100 yds, shooting inexpensive PPU 168g match ammo. Not sure if its was the muzzle break or just that it is 308, but recoil is light, especially compared to my friend's 30-06 we also had out. Even with the oversized tactical bolt handle, there was no interference with the scope when cycling, I saw where another reviewer had an issue with the bipod quality. This was not my experience. After 40 rounds downrange it had loosened where it attaches to the sling stud, but I tightened the thumb screw and it was good to go. Overall, I highly recommend the Remington 700 VTR. As always Buds is great to deal with and the transaction was painless.

The rifle is great and cycles amazing, aside from the fact that I didn’t get a flat dark eart stock like specified I have absolutely no complains. I sighted it in and shot a boar at 785 yards with nosler .308 rounds. I have shot over 300 rounds and it’s going great.

A:no it is a hinged internal magazine not a detachable mag. There are aftermarket companies that make kits to convert the 700 rifles to detachable box magsSee 1 more answer | -

A:It is not "Pillar Bedded" and the stock.....well it's a stock. I have a good friend in the Atlanta area that has a VTR, cool looking, but it's not the tack driver he wished for. Barrel may be stiffer because of the shape but I think the shape affects accuracy. As for the stock ...trash it ! Big Rem should be ???? for such a low end Tupperware stock on a fine rifle. He replaced his VTR stock with a McMillan A-3 and loves it. I don't think bedding the VTR will be worth the money because there just isn't much to work with. Just let us know how it goes however you decide.See 8 more answers |
