At the end of the Civil War, Oliver Winchester set his staff to work improving the Henry rifle. Plant superintendent Nelson King devised a convenient loading gate that eliminated the Henry's awkward split-tube magazine and allowed the addition of a wooden fore-end. Dubbed the "Yellowboy" for its bright brass frame, the new Model 1866 rifles and carbines gained immediate acceptance by lawmen, cowboys and Native Americans across the American frontier. Versions of the 1866 were used by Benito Juarez's forces in Mexico and by the Turks against the Russians in the 1870s.

The issues that I have with my rifle is that it is a pain to load. I can not get the full capacity of cartridges in the magazine, the spring or mag follower binds up. It is slowly getting better. The second issue that I have with my rifle is that it will jam when trying to cycle another cartridge into the chamber. I have the same version of this rifle in .45 Colt and it does not have these issues, only my .38special version.

Love this rifle. It arrived needing a serious cleaning, but I always clean/inspect new weapons before firing anyway. Put about 200 rounds thru it and now it is smooth as silk.

I had read nothing but great reviews prior to purchase and it is no surprise that the product I received lived up to those expectations. The fit, finish, feel and look of this rifle are all excellent. I have had a chance to take it out to the range prior to this review and the accuracy is also excellent. The rifle came well packed and if I had any criticism of the product at all, it would be that the protective plastic left odd tarnish patterns on the receiver that had to be polished out with a metal polish compound. I took it out to a local CLA competition and that newly shined rifle drew a crowd of admirers pretty quickly. If you are on the fence about purchasing this item (and probably any uberti product for that matter) I would highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed!

Almost waited to late to get this fine firearm. Overall I was not unhappy with the appearance. The brass was incased in plastic and the gun needed a serious cleaning which took forever. I don't know how it shoots as I never intend to fire it, didn't need it just wanted it and it looks good sitting in its place of honor. I can say one thing for it, this beast is Heavy! Very happy with the purchase and as usual Buds went out of their way to see that everything went perfect. Took three weeks to receive the weapon from the time I placed the order.
