I purchased a 22 inch Benelli M2 from Buds that instantly converted me to short barreled shotguns for eastern woodland hunting. I have been after a similarly barreled pump gun since then. This is my first 500. I handled the wood stocked, long barreled 500’s decades ago and found them muzzle heavy, with terrible, spongy actions compared to Ithaca 37’s and REM 870’s. So, I just didn’t consider them for about 35 years. Fast forward to today’s pump market-late model 870’s are suspect, Ithaca’s are fairly unobtainable and cost prohibitive, the BPS is good quality, beautiful, but far too heavy for my taste. I very much like the Benelli Novas, arguably the best quality pump in the world, but the 12 is sized for a good sized shooter who needs a 3.5 inch cartridge-whoever that may be-I sometimes wonder. The 20 gauge Nova is very nicely proportioned by the way. As well, Benelli doesn’t make a short barreled hunting model. Hint hint. Then, I happened upon the 500 Turkey on your website-not terribly expensive, threaded, 20 inch barrel, listed at only 7lbs. After a little hemming and hawing over my early experiences with the 500, I ordered the short little Mossberg and was well rewarded for my expenditure. The short barrel, synthetic furniture and trigger group make this baby a pleasure to handle in the woods. The balance is excellent for a pump gun. The action smoothness seems to have improved markedly over the decades. Can’t complain about them anymore. The 2 piece linked action bar of the Mossberg will never be as smooth as an 870, but then again, an 870 will never be as smooth as an Ithace 37. For that matter, late model 870’s aren’t as smooth as their older siblings. Perhaps we gun folks over think these things a bit. This Mossberg is pure pleasure that I can’t really gripe about in any practical way. The 5 1 capacity allows it to do double duty for self defense, in my opinion. I have an 870 tactical with 18.5 inch barrel, but find it so muzzle heavy and cumbersome that I am now keeping the Mossberg next to me in the house instead. Currently, it is my only long gun that doesn’t reside in a gun safe. I take it just about everywhere. And to ice the cake, I find it most attractive. Aesthetics matter! Were it a perfect world, Turkey guns would come with a full set of choke tubes, but that is a wish rather than complaint. Firing 3 inch shells through this 7 pounder gun makes for a positively unpleasant experience-but one isn’t expected to take it Goose hunting. I use extra padding for patterning and a round or 3 per year while turkey hunting won’t bother the shooter. The short barrel patterns acceptably with Carlson’s IC and Mod tubes firing ounce and a quarter game loads in 4,5,6, 7.5 and 8’s that I have tried. Enjoy it so much that I expect to purchase the other Turkey models in 20 and 410 and maybe another 12. All three list at Buds for well under $500. Quite a bargain in today’s gun world.

Bought it for turkey hunting and it is perfect. Love the Mossberg 500 series and highly recommend. Like the compact size when hiking through the woods. As always highly recommend Buds.

I bought this gun to use for turkey hunting and I believe it will fit the bill. I have put about 40 shells through it this far and it operated flawlessly. The factory recoil pad did a good job. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and look forward to carrying it in the turkey woods this spring. Bud's service was excellent, as always.

I bought this Mossberg 500 Turkey 12ga 20" Camo for varmint hunting. The short barrel and the fiber front sight make quick swing shots quicker and easier. I have premium extended Carlson choke tubes that I bought years ago for my Winchester 1300 that fit this Mossberg 500 also. The 500 has been around for over 60 years because it is reliable, throws an even pattern and is very flexible. We have a trusted Mossberg model 510 in .410 for self-defense. This 500 12ga pump will send intruders fleeing for their lives with just the racking sound. A buddy of mine has invited me to go back east with him and do a slug deer hunt when I retire in a couple years. Mossberg sells a 12ga fully rifled barrel for the 500s that can be installed in less than a minute. Now I just need to decide whether to get the cantilever rail for a red dot or iron sights.

Gun came quickly. It came in Mossberg cardboard gun box and all was in good shape. It did come with a plug (required for turkeys in my state). The description stated that a "padded camo sling" was included, but this did not come with the gun

I bought this for the one purpose of slugging at the firing range. I have a couple of Winchester semi-auotos for birds and clays and I use a 930 for home security. None of these were suited for a constant steady diet of high-powered slugs, not like a 500 anyway. And the GT met all my specs - barrel length, smooth bore, length of pull, accu-choke system, high magazine capacity. Friends suggested 20" bbl may be too short for my purposes. But 22" and 24" models with these features at this price were scarce. Also, I had seen what the 20" bbl on my 930 can do - very accurate at 50 yds, so I'm expecting the same from this one. And if not, well, it's a 500, which means there are dozens of barrels I could swap it out with.
Would have passed on the camo if i could, but looking at it now, it's beautiful and glad it's there. I installed and bore-sighted a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32 and replaced the very nice XX-full turkey choke (NOT for slugs!) with an open-cylinder tube to protect the threads. Can't wait to get it out there! .
Had considered the SP for the extra shell capacity (almost same price) but decided it looked a little menacing and almost silly with a scope and it had no sights or choke threads.
Buds asked for this review right away when in fact I won't get an opportunity to shoot it till late September. I'll come back with an update as needed if they'll allow it, and no news is good news. But so far, the out-of-the-box experience has been great. nice. The owner's manual is thorough and they threw in a choke wrench, too. I have a lot of confidence in the firearm and am expecting great performance and reliability.
And as for Buds, as usual, they had the best price, they had it in stock, they shipped it for free, and I had it in less than a week. I always come here first.

I haven’t shot the gun yet but it feels and looks great. No flaws noticed. Camo finish appears to have been done really well. Can’t wait for turkey season to come back around. Just hard to beat this turkey gun imo for the price Buds is selling it for. Really good deal on a solid and reliable turkey pump gun.

A:Michael, you can remove the screw on turkey choke to fire Slugs and Buckshot. This model uses Mossberg Accu-Choke tubes. That said, I would wait on a 500 or 590 or even a Maverick 88 for home defense. Cheers and stay safe! -
