Taylor Brands is proud to present a series of limited edition commemorative cutlery/tin sets celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the Republic of Texas. Before 1821 Texas was a part of the Spanish colony of New Spain. In 1821 Mexico declared Independence from New Spain making Texas a part of Mexico. In Goliad in what is now Texas on December 20, 1835 the first declaration for Texas Independence was signed. On March 2, 1836 the Texas Declaration of Independenc was enacted at Washington-on-the-Brazos which effectively created the Republic of Texas. A mere four days later a two week long battle ensued where the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna defeated nearly 200 Texans defending the small mission known as the Alamo. This Battle of the Alamo led to the battle cry of "Remember the Alamo!" which bolstered the Texas Revolution. On April 21, 1836 near the present day city of Houston, General Santa Anna's entire force of 1,600 was killed or captured in the decisive battle known as the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texas hero of this was General Sam Houston and the victory was accomplished with only nine losses out of a force of 800 Texans.
