Another great, fast purchase from Buds. This rifle is of good build quality and fit/finish. Can't wait to get it to the range! Thanks Buds.

Bought this last week after contacting Mossberg about the receiver material. Asked the question "steel or pot metal" on the community q&a, got 1 wrong answer (steel) and 1 irate answer (did I think this was HiPoint?). At this price point, the receiver is not going to be steel (to costly to forge, to difficult to caste). Emailed Mossberg, got a reply the next day: aluminum alloy (not pot metal, which is zinc alloy). That is a high quality alternative. Having owned lever guns in 22, 30-30, 44, 45 from Henry, Browning, Marlin, and Winchester, I am very impressed by the 464. Dollar for dollar, it beats them all. The bolt is somewhat crudely finished, but the action was smooth out of the box. Took it all down (which I do with almost all my new guns). Mossberg provides a detailed schematic. The trigger-spring-sear assembly requires a slave pin (and patience: I had to fashion one from a roll pin) to re-install. And the trigger-sear spring is very wimpy (I bent it in the process and found a better replacement in my spare parts bag). That spring is the only really bad part in the gun. The roll pin for the positioner (opposite the extractor) is a pain (set at an angle in the bolt). The roll pins in the bolt are really small (think 1892). But to clean the gun thoroughly, you need only remove the (heavy) receiver cover. The bolt comes off with it (no need to remove the stock which takes 1/2 inch socket, by the way). You can get to all the works with foaming solvent and wd40 (even the magazine, if you want). Took to the range and put a few hundred rounds (CCI stinger, Eley contact and action, Aguila supermax). A couple of failures to fire despite good hits on the rim (Aguila). That's all. No failures to feed, no lever action jams. And it shot straighter offhand than my 10/22 offhand (iron sights). I did have to put a white dot on the front post (totally black). The action is a pleasure. The lever can pinch if you are not careful, but I had no problems (wearing gloves). Mossberg put in a hammer block (a real hammer block, not a transfer bar) which is pinned and swaged to the trigger. It works as advertised (blocking the hammer if the trigger is not depressed). First time I have seen that on a rifle. Plus it has a top-mounted safety. Maybe overboard on the safeties, but Mossberg is obviously looking at the youth market. Made in the US. The kind of product that makes me believe in US manufacturing.

Not the quality I expected at this price point. One would be better off with a used 39 or a Henry. However, after some minor home gunsmithing, especially on the lever, it turned out ok. My thoughts are, if you're going to make a lever 22, why not do it right?

Bought it, tried it, liked it. It's smooth and with the rubber recoil pads on the stock there is hardly any kick at all. Did adjust the real sights to fit my eyes other than that it's a nice rifle.
