One promising alternative to lead is bismuth shot or, more accurately, an alloy of 97% bismuth and 3% tin. The small amount of tin is added to enhance malleability because bismuth alone is too brittle. Proponents of bismuth-tin shot claim that it closely resembles the ballistic performance of lead shot, will not harm gun barrels and is not toxic if ingested by wildlife or domestic animals.
