I was looking for a simple and reliable handgun for home defense, and that I would not have a concern about passing down to my children when the time came. This version of the S&W642 was an easy choice, and it has not disappointed. I realize that different guns of the same model may have individual quality control issues, my experience with three of the no-lock S&W 642s is different than the previous reviewer. All of the guns have a fairly smooth trigger pull, although they are a bit heavier than some of the other S&W revolvers I have used. I have been able to keep fairly good groups with the guns out to 15 yards, and much more than adequate for the intended purpose. The only two things I may change on the guns are to install the apex j-frame trigger kit ( which lightens trigger pull), and put on a larger set of rubber grips. The light weight of the gun would be definite plus for concealed carry during the summer, but maybe not as controllable if shooting +P or +P+ ammunition. This is not a 50 yard target gun by any means, but an excellent choice for it's intended use for short range personal protection. Would definitely make this purchase again.

642-1 hammerless: horrible trigger pull. thie is only for the deapest carry where corrosion is a problem. i'm not going to sell it... as..who knows.. i my need it in salt water or a bare carry under the armpit or wherever. if i want to hit something quickly at over 20ft..i am in trouble.

Great little revolver, this is my second 642. My first one has the lock, I've never had any problems with the lock, but it's one of those things that has always bothered me. I decided to get another one without the lock from Buds. Great price and a good transfer. Both of my 642s are very, very accurate, you can "stage" the triggers and make a precise shot when slow firing. They are well built, accurate, and can be picked up for a reasonable price. They make the perfect pocket gun.

Very decent firearm for pocket carry. I'm not a huge fan of aluminum guns and probably won't buy another, but for the one intended purpose of the purchase it works as i need it to. Trigger was a bit rough at first and opening the side plate verified the rumors i had heard, absolutely no oil or lube of any kind were present. After (very lightly) removing burs, polishing internal parts (Mother's Mag), and applying a few drops of super lube high viscosity oil and super lube grease to the trigger sear the action smoothed up like butter. Outfit this firearm with a square and round Mika pocket holster and you one of the best pocket combos in the world.
**The only real negative I have on the gun is that screws hold the side plate on, and you must wrap _hit_ the handle to loosen it. Any screw on a firearm to me is ridiculous, screws can be lost/stripped very easily not to mention you have to have the tool handy at all times. I've owned Ruger revolvers and they didn't have that problem (held together with pins and locking parts). Just my two cents.**
