I had a S&W Commander PD which was a very fine reliable pistol. I traded it and started collecting Kimbers and always missed the Smith. I had been looking at the new E series for a while and finally decided to take the plunge and don't regret it.
The pistol is beautiful and well made with great finish and fits nice and tight between the frame and slide. No rattles when you shake it just like my Kimbers and unlike my Colts. The Smith has a lot of features that usually are only found on high end guns, serrated top of slide, serrated back of slide and front of grip. Also an ambi safety, which as a lefty I really appreciate. The round butt grip is very comfortable in the hand and does conceal a little easier. I have a few Bobtail 1911's and like this style of grip alot.
Some people complain about the external extractor but I don't see it. It may not be the original 1911 design but it works great and that is what matters. This pistol has been 100% reliable so far and very accurate and see no reason for that to change. The only problem I have had with it is that my Wilson mags won't lock up in the grip, they seem to tall, but I have not figured out why. All other mags with metal followers instead of the Wilson plastic followers have worked fine, Colt, Chip McCormick, Kimber, etc. Since I have not figured out what the problem is, I don't know if it is a model wide problem or just this particular pistol. But not a big deal.
Anyway, my thoughts are that this is a very nice pistol and worth the money and a pleasure to look at and shoot.
By the way, Bud's has the Commander size PD back in stock at this time, which was discontinued in 2011. I don't know how they got them are where they came from but I already put mine on layaway and can't wait to get it. I have bought over 40 guns from Bud's over the years and have no complaints with their prices or service.

Great carry gun! The Bobtail grip really allows your hand to form to it. Accuracy is dead on. I have around 500 rounds through it so far, with only one failure to feed (and that was within the first 50 rounds, well within a reasonable break in period). I have noticed what others have stated about the black finish on the scandium scratching off a little around the thumb safety and the slide lock. But it is not that drastic, and I'm not concerned about it. My guns aren't safe queens, and they'll get their fair share of scratches, dings and dents over their life with me at the helm. Slide to frame fit is very tight, and the attention to detail on this piece is immaculate. Noticeably lighter than my Les Baer Commanche (Commander length 4.25"), but the recoil, AKA Kick, isn't bad at all. Very pleased with this purchase.

Beautiful gun. I've put 350 rounds through it without a hiccup (factory and low power reloads). Time will tell on the finish on the scandiium, but looks great now. Regarding Mathew C's comments...seems like you got a lemon. It's not really the same as the supercarry Kimber though they look similar. Kimber doesn't have scandium, but aluminum frame. If you've seen the finish on the Kimber up close (I was initially going to purchase the Supercarry), it looks like paint. I think the SW is much more attractive, but I guess that's personal. I've also got two Kimbers, and I would not say the workmanship is better than the SW. In fact one of those Kimbers had to be sent back to the factory twice...both times after the one year warranty had expired, and I was charged for "repairs" just to get the gun to reliably feed hollowpoints. S&W has a lifetime warranty. Don't think I'll buy another Kimber.

Just an FYI I just received this gun today and have yet to fire it, so this review only applies to initial thoughts. First off this is one of the sexiest, best looking guns I have had the privilege to hold and own. S&W definitely raised the bar in the world of 1911's. The wood grips were darker than the ones in the image, but thats understandable being they are wood and will tend to vary in color from grip to grip. The gun feels great in in your hands, wouldn't change a thing about the design. The only reasons i'm rating them 4/5 is 1. I have yet to shoot the gun, and 2. the gun did have a scratch under one of the safeties. I read that the safeties and the slide release would scratch the gun, and after messing with the gun for quite some time, it appears that the slide release is a non issue (at least on mine), and the left side of the gun has a 1/3" long scratch under the left side safety, and the right side appears that it is/will slowly rub off some of the black paint in time. Beyond the known issues, this is a great gun and am very pleased with my purchase.

Ordered this beauty on 4/9/2012, and it arrived on 4/12/2012. It arrived in perfect condition. After reading the disclaimers about the pistol possibly arriving in a just fired condition, I was ready to give it a thorough cleaning. The only cleaning it needed was a light once over and a little lubrication, which should be done to any just received firearm. Can't wait to get this bad boy to the range!
Thanks Buds, you've come through for me again!
