To be fair, there is not much you can "review" on a spare magazine, so I will try to give my thoughts on the Shield and mags as a whole. The S&W M&P Shield comes in either .40 S&W or 9mm ... despite being a ".40 guy" and literally being raised on .40 by a police officer whose department pioneered the .40 S&W in Law Enforcement usage, I have been going back to 9mm more and more for the cost savings, extra ammo capacity, and absolutely fine ballistics performance when combined with modern, high quality defensive ammo choices. The .40 S&W Shield comes with one 6-rd flush-fitting magazine and one 7-rd extended; similarly, the 9mm Shield comes with a 7-rd flush-fitting magazine and an 8-rd extended magazine. This is absolutely ingenious and the engineers at S&W deserve an award for the way they designed this firearm and entire package. The flush-fitting magazine (I chose 9mm) gives me 7+1 rds of 9mm (a service-level caliber found in duty weapons, not a backup weapon caliber like a .380) in a form that is absolutely concealable and lightweight, carrying-friendly, and still very shootable. BUT, the 8-rd magazine changes everything... not only is it capable of packaging an extra round, it actually increases the grip length to a near-exact comparison of the Glock 19 ... which is only the most popular 9mm handgun in the country and almost equally adept at service-use as it is at concealed carry. When using the 8rd extended mag, the Shield shoots like a service-gun, full of life and accuracy and just tons of potential here. But for carrying, you can keep the 8rd handy and keep the slim, concealed profile of the M&P Shield very minute by using the 7rd in the gun. For me, I wanted at least ONE EXTRA 8rd magazine in addition to the one included, a spare to my backup magazine if you will. Now I carry the Shield 7+1 IWB in my Galco King Tuk hybrid holster, with TWO spare magazines of 8rds each (that have the grip extensions to help increase accuracy, pointability, gripping and overall purchase of the firearm). I highly highly recommend all you Shield 9mm owners to buy at least ONE of these.... I will be coming back for more very soon!
