Axis rifles save money without sacrificing performance. Savage didn't design a cheaper rifle; they designed a better way to make a Savage, including pillar-bedded barrels with more uniform cooling and greater consistency. These Axis rifles feature a modern design with silky-smooth bolt operation and a detachable box magazine. Drilled and tapped for scope
mounts, these standard models have a black synthetic stock coupled with a 22" matte black carbon steel barrel to allow for multi-purpose shooting in multiple locales.

In my opinion, for the money you simply cannot beat this rifle. Cheap stock - yes, less than desirable out of the box trigger - yes. But the heavy trigger can be remidied with some ":tweaking", or you can purchase an after market trigger for around $100 - I got mine down to about 2lbs with some "tweaking", and it is quite accurate. If I do my part, and with the right ammo - MOA or better 5 shot groups from 100 yards fairly consistently. I put a decent piece of glass on top, so I've got around $450 total in the rifle. This is NOT simply a "beginners" rifle. I've been shooting for decades - so I'm no "rookie". Also, with the money I've got in this rifle, I'm not too awfully concerned about it getting a little beat up. Great buy. PS, for some reason, even with the 1 in 9 twist - my Axis shoots 68 to 77 grain bullets the most accurately. In a nutshell - I highly recommend the Savage Axis rifle to anyone wanting a solid performer at a very reasonable price.

I bought this rifle a couple of months ago and it's damned near perfect. The trigger was too tough for so I bought a Rifle-Basics trigger for it. It is adjustible and a gunsmith is not adjustible for about the same price. I mounted an old Bausch and Lomb scope on it, looked down the barrel to bore sight it, then to our range. I had some 20 year old fmj jacket rounds and I was ready to go. Shot a few times at 25 yards to get it on the paper, then at 38 yards for a wished for 200 "0". At 38 yard the group could be covered with a dime. My shooting partner had put a string of clay pigions out at ranges of 100 to 250 yards(by rangefinder) There were 3 at 187 yards. I shot at the first one and missed by an inch to the left. My buddy noticed a slight wind and told me to correct for it. I did and broke all three with 3 shots. I was shooting from a lead sled and that always helps.
It is a far better rifle that what I paid for it. I encourage my hunting partners to shoot it and they are amazed. I'm sold on these rifles.
