This is one of the largest revolvers I have ever owned. Can't wait to take it to the range. All I can say is WOW!!! Buds price was way cheaper than any local gun shop. Thanks Buds!

Had to send the gun back, the new firearm looked worse than guns I have owned for 20yrs. It had numerous spots on the stainless that were black and orange that would not come off. The ejector rod well had gouges and burrs. Stainless had heavy hazing. Even the FFL couldn’t believe it, how it passed QC I will never know. Sent it back bought a BFR.

Consistent S&W quality and workmanship. This big, heavy, long, revolver is just plain fun to shoot. Don't really have a valid use for it, just fun. I have a couple of hundred rounds though it now and still put a couple of rounds down range at the end of each range day.

I like big pistols and this one is the best. It shoots as good as it looks.

No problem with the weapon, but the 500 is over rated in my opinion. A good 44 magnum would do just fine for deer or hog unless you're hunting Grizz. A very fine piece of work, too heavy for an EDC but a good hunting weapon it is.

I ordered this revolver from Bud's over 6 years ago. It has been excellent. I believe the 6.5 inch ported barrel to be the sweet spot in the line-up. I have put 100's of wide ranging projectiles through this revolver, from light 275gr screamers to 700gr keyholing wrist snappers. The 500 is still tight and after a good cleaning could be passed as almost new. Packing it more than to the range bench requires a shoulder rig. I've used Galco's Kodiak holster rig with good results. YMMV.

I have to say I’m very pleased with this revolver. The cylinder lockup is perfect with no play at all. Barely a cylinder gap to speak of, and the single action trigger pull breaks like glass with not a single bit of creep. The double action is heavy but is smooth as expected with a S&W. Despite its size and weight I’m actually surprised on how well it handles and balances. A good purchase and proud to be part of my collection. My 3 time doing business with buds and it won’t be the last, Always professional and great.

I bought another gun through Buds and have happy with all purchases. This gun looks and shoots great. Others have tried it and thought the same.

First of all, dealing with Bud's was a delight. Had my gun in my hands in less than a week. That's pretty good in my opinion. Secondly, if you're reading reviews on this gun, then you're probably thinking about buying it, and if that's the case, please do yourself a favor and just buy it! This has quickly risen to be my favorite gun. The overall quality is exceptional. Fit and finish are perfect. Functions perfectly, of course. Now, for the gun itself.... wow. What a beast. The weight is substantial, but that's to be expected. The recoil depends on exactly what load you're shooting. The cheapest ammo is fairly mild, barely more than 44mag. The hottest Underwood loads are... well, extreme. There's no other word. It's orders of magnitude more violent than anything else out there. But if you have good grip and good technique you can shoot it well. (but not quickly) In fact, my gun is quite accurate. Take it to the range, and you'll get some looks and some comments for sure. It's a real head turner, especially because the report is as silly as the recoil. What is this gun for? That I really don't know. Even on big bears this is close to overkill. 1 shot is all you'd need. For me it's a range toy for shots and giggles. The biggest con is the price of the ammo, but I reload so that's not a problem for me. I can shoot it for under .50 cents a shot. But if you're buying factory ammo, be prepared to spend nearly $2 PER BULLET.

Just buy it! This has moved up to #1 on my list. Buy it for yourself as a Christmas present. I reload my own ammo so it is more affordable to shoot. Buds was great as usual. Others who fired it have smiles. What can one say? Love it.

Awesome pistol. Very comfortable grip, but you are still fully aware you are firing 2,500 ft-lb rounds. Much more manageable than I thought it would be. Great finish and buttery smooth action. Great service from Bud’s, too.

I love this gun!!! I like the looks of all 3 typical lengths (4", 6.5", 8 3/8"), and it was very hard for me to make up my mind on what would be best for me. I particularly prefer the more traditional look of the 6.5" with the underlug that just covers the extractor. Also, as nice as it may be to some who like the option of changing compensators- like what's on the 4" & 8 3/8", I actually rather not have that sometimes, even though it does look AWESOME. It's really hard for me to criticize any Smith and Wesson lol. I just like the more subtle porting on the top of the barrel. So, for my tastes, for a first buy, the 6.5" was the right compromise for middle of the road weight and handling, and it looks nice to me. I will probably be getting a 4" someday,,, I'll just be honest, I do like the looks of those guys lol. Don't rack your brain too hard on it if your like I was and can't make up your mind, you won't regret getting the 6.5" because it is more beautiful in hand than in pictures.

Tons of fun to shoot, very manageable with a 350 grain bullet. Very accurate right out of the box. No regrets on this purchase.

Again, another great transaction from Buds. If your thinking about this gun do it you won't be sorry but remember it is a beast and a lot of fun to shoot.

I keep hearing people saying how they hate to shoot this revolver. I hear them talk trash about how much it hurts to shoot. I've got news for you... if you're any kind of man with shooting experience, this is one of the biggest thrills you can get from firing a revolver. This is my 2nd favorite revolver. MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE REVOLVER IS MY MODEL 629 44 MAG. That's my baby, but the 500 holds a special place in my heart. I love this revolver and recommend it to any MAN who isn't recoil sensitive!

I'm somewhat disappointed that it took Buds Gunshop 8 days from the time I placed my order to the time my order was shipped. I was informed that since it comes from a different warehouse, shipping would take longer. All my other firearm orders have taken a lot less time to ship - BUT - this review is about the S&W 500 and not about Buds so I am adding to it's all-5-star rating by giving it my 5 stars. This revolver is a beast. Feels like I slammed the palm of my hand against a moving locomotive. I have read about people shooting this thing once or twice and then selling it because it's too powerful for them. Not me. I loaded up 400 grain powder coated bullets in front of a 32.5 grain charge of AA#9 powder and the beast just screamed. What a delight to shoot. Recoil is about the same as my Ruger SuperRedhawk 44 magnum but if you like being kicked like a Mule, you'll love this revolver. I cannot wait to head down to the range again. Please note that this is not a gun for novices. If you are not used to big caliber, large bore firearms, this gun is not for you. If you like shooting a 44 magnum with hot loads single-handedly, then the S&W 500 50 caliber is just the gun for you. Enjoy it!!

This is one large, quality pistol that is a crowd gatherer and attention getter at the range. You really know you have a pistol in your hand wih this one. It almost has to be a handloader's pistol as the cost of ammunition is HIGH. But, with cast handloads it can be anything from a mild plinker to a hand cannon....I have an Accurate Mould that casts a 728 grain bullet. With the appropriate powder it goes to the edge of how much you want to endure in a pistol shot. The quality is impeccable and it has a trigger that is as good as ones on my K-38's. The S&W .500 just makes you smile to hold it. I don't know how practical it is, but it sure is fun to own.

Quit reading reviews and wasting your time, this is the best gun you will ever own. I shoot this handgun very accurate at very long distance that you cant with most handguns. This gun looks good shoots good and is a gun that will catch everyones eyes and ears. Took it to the range everyone came down to look at it a few took pictures of it lol. I had wanted this gun for over a year im more then happy to finally have it. Buds was amazing as always. This makes the 4th gun ive bought from buds, cant beat their prices cant beat their quality. After using buds twice I decided I would never buy a gun anywhere else.
