WOW, what an awsome rifle for the price! With the new Hornady flex tip, this 30-30 is easily a 250 - 300 yard deer rifle. I know most will not believe it, and I didn't think it could be true, but I took it to range after receiving from Buds last fall and was shooting 1/4 in groups from bench at 100 yards to sight it in for deer hunting in WV. Everyone at the range was extremely impressed with looks and especially jaw dropping at the consistent grouping (with Bushnell scope). Ended up shooting 20 rounds to get famailar with rifle, and groups stayed in 1/4 inch even with hot and dirty barrel.
Took my first deer with a single shot between shrubs at just over 250 yards, shooting up hill, by restinig it on the top of a fence post. But be prepared, those Hornady bullets EXPLODE upon impact!!! Took my 2nd deer from shoulder at about 125 yards and went down with 1 shot, and the hole in the deer was big enough to put my fist through. Again folks, this is simply a 30-30...but with the Hornady flex tip and this "cheap" Marlin rifle.
Again, I know most will not believe that you can get a rifle shooting 1/4 in groups consistenly for this price (especially a lever action 30-30) but that's OK. I wouldn't either and neither did my family or friends till they saw it in action (and that's with them sinking $2k out for MOA rifles that aren't MOA except in advertising). Also, there are those that will say one shouldn't take 250 - 300 yard shots for deer, and that's OK...but look, I get 1 week per year to deer hunt (without baiting and tracking), so I take what I can get when I can get if I'm comfortable with my rifle and the shot.
