The M9 was my assigned weapon when I traveled to Iraq and Afghanistan and I used to travel there all the time with the military. I think it says a lot when the armorer runs you through all the checks you MUST do before taking the weapon: 1) Hold slide from muzzle end and tap with barrel to test if slide is cracked (ring = good, no ring = bad, 2) check barrel around chamber to make sure it's not cracked, 3) check drop block to make sure there are no fractures and/or cracks, etc. The M4 is the primary weapon with this is as the backup so it doesn't see the same amount of use. I've heard that the civilian version is better, but my experience did not inspire confidence. Also, trying to disengage the slide safety during a high-stress situation is NOT easy when your adrenaline is pumping. I'd recommend a weapon with a frame mounted safety.
