THE GOOD: As the previous reviewer noted, the factory scope on this rifle is NICE! I normally mount either Leupold or Nikon Prostaff/Buckmaster 3x9 scopes on all my hunting rifles and expected to replace the factory scope on this one. I ordered one rifle with the scope and one without, thinking I would give the scoped one to my father and keep the other. The 3x9 40mm factory BUSHNELL scope that came with it surprised the hell out of me. No joke, the quality is ten times better than any other Bushnell I've ever seen (had a few factory Bushnells that came on .22 plinkers back in the day that were just awful). Don't let the brand name fool you. This is actually a good quality scope...with great eye relief for those of us who don't want to put our retina right on the lens. Can't hype it enough...for the extra $35, it's worth every penny and I promise you won't be disappointed. You'd drop at least $120+ on a similar quality scope. No kidding, my FFL was blown away and jotted down the model # of the scope so he could buy one. And the 3x9 is more than enough for HMR range. Also, the accutrigger is flawless. Coupled with the bull barrel, it makes this rifle a tack driver, even past 100 yards. I feel like you could shoot flies with this thing.
THE BAD: Not to be completely biased while still in the honeymoon phase...there are only two drawbacks I can find with this rifle. One is the weight (but hey, it's a bull barrel...so I knew going in it would be a little on the heavy side) which actually helps contribute to the overall accuracy of the rifle. The other "problem" is the action. On both rifles I purchased, it's pretty stiff out of the box. Much more so than any other savage rifles I own (I've had 5 or 6). I expect the actions will loosen up after they've had a few hundred rounds through them, but so far it's like shifting gears with no clutch. Also, it's completely opposite of the first reviewer's comment, but the magazines on each rifle I received was also very tight (i.e, you can pull the release but the mag won't fall out on its own, you have to forcibly remove it). But overall, for under $300 bucks you get an EXCELLENT rifle with a surprisingly good scope. I'm shocked by the overall build quality. Great value! And Bud's was great as usual.
