Savage 96222 93R17GVXP 17HMR AT W/SCP
[96222]
$275.00
by Michael S Date Added: Friday 31 August, 2012
FAS,T FAST service by Bud’s! This was the 1st purchase I’ve made from Bud’s and couldn’t ask for any better. Not only was this rifle $50.00 cheaper than any of my local shops could get it for, but I ordered this on a Wednesday afternoon and it arrived at the FFL on Friday morning.
As far as the rifle, it is the bull barrel model, which appears to be of heavy, good quality, the Crown is nice. The bolt action seemed to be a little tight out of the box, but I ran the bolt about 25 to 30 times while sitting on the couch and it seemed to start smoothing out. The stock is some sort of laminate material that seems to be of fairly decent quality, it doesn’t bend or flex freely from what I can tell so far. To my surprise the barrel is actually free floating and doesn’t touch the chassis anywhere. The scope is a variable power Bushnell 3X9-40mm. It is mounted to the rifle with pretty good rings and base (plenty good for a .17hmr), the glass is clear and the reticle is crisp. It also came with a set of “see thru” front and back scope covers.

The negatives from what I can see so far, (still haven’t shot it yet), are first, the magazine does not insert or drop smoothly. It fits loosely in the magazine well and rattles a bit. It also moves up or down in the chamber at least a quarter of an inch when I put any pressure on it. I think these issues are because Savage uses the same magazine and magazine well for both the 93R and MKII models, as well as the same magazine for 22 WMR as well as 17hmr. The only other issue I’ve noticed so far is the scope came “mounted and bore sighted” according to the manufacturer. Like I said, I still haven’t shot it, but I did put it in my gun vise as soon as I got it and put my scope leveler on it and saw it was mounted on the rifle canted counter-clockwise about a 16th of an inch. (I just realigned it)
Overall it seems to be a really good value for the quality of the rifle and scope for the price. I recommend it!
I’ll update my review after I send some lead (and polymer) down range tomorrow.
