What a nice little gun.
Savage has upgraded their tupperware to be much more than just a year or two ago (they are listening), so that was the first nice surprise. I have a 93 FVSS 22 mag also from Bud's that came with a super flimsy stock (but a tack driver sitll).
I checked all the functions and took it all apart once home, and found the action screws, scope mounts and rings were all looser and oilier than they should have been, and would probably have disappointed if someone were to just unpack it, take it to the range and start shooting. I can't see it would have held zero.
Savage does leave some rough edges from machining. There was a little red threadlock on the rear screw (?), which seemed to only have 1-2 threads engaged, but held at 20 inch pounds.
The bolt was quite rough when it engages, and the extractor side had a small burr on it, but 100% functioning.
Do clean the gun (any gun) before you shoot it--there was some pretty heavy oil on parts, and the barrel was filthy, which is not a real negative, so much as they may have had to tune it a bit.
The bull barrel is beautiful...the recessed crown is really nice... the bluing is a little rough & dirty but cleaned up nice... the button rifling Savage does make such a pretty barrel where it counts though.
I put it all back together (write it down-the included manual does not have the right exploded view) and torqued everything where it should have been. One scope mount screw stripped the head at 25 inch pounds, but the threads were in good, and it doesn't have sights anyway, so it stays... the others held fine, as did the action screws. the old stock might have flexed a bit, but this one did not appear to.
I had all day to sight it, as I did a break in on it, and found it took a while before it started cleaning nicer, probably 55 rounds through the process it started showing less lead streaking sliding the dry patches easily after cleaning.
Sighted in, broken in, the rifle can clean spent .223 off of grass from 40 yards... I am not a good enough shooter to require any more than this combination deal offers in terms of accuracy.
Nice little shooter. Savage puts out a consistently accurate product. The assembly & finish may leave a little to be desired, but can be remedied very easily, and it's well worth it: these are shooters!
Bud's delivered as agreed. Satisfied customer.
