The size and weight are good for pocket carry (about 28 oz loaded). I first tried some standard 38 spl, 38 spl +p, and 357. The first two cartridge types worked fine at 7 yds. After I ran two loads of the 357, the range officer came down to ask what I was shooting. The flash, and especially the bang, were attention getting. The gun recoil was very pronounced. It took longer to get back on target; compared to the 38 spl rounds. Weeks later, I tried some Buffalo Bore, short barrel ammo. This ammo is supposed to flash less. I do think the flash was reduced. The recoil seemed about the same. Again, another range officer came down to ask what I was shooting. The 357 bang was so loud; I suspect it might put varmints to flight all by itself. I also have the mod 60 w/ a 3 in barrel. For me, there is a marked difference in flash, bang, and accuracy. My shots started to open up at 10 yrds. But, the 3 in was accurate, for me, out to 15 yds. I am going to have to get used to the sound and recoil. I would like to carry the 357, but for now, I am going with the 38 spl. I have a S&W mod 686, w/8 in barrel, in 357. I got it for hunting. The experience of 357 shot from these smaller, lighter revolvers is very very different.
