Brian K,

I doubt very seriously if it was your S&W 617. I have had the same problem when I shoot bad ammo in revolvers. Brass cases are supposed to stretch when firing and they shrink back to almost pre-fired size and make easy to extract. Years ago I had an S&W model 19 that did the same thing with Super Vel ammo (ammo you haven't been able to buy in 40 years) but not with any other ammo. Try a different brand of ammo and see what happens. The 617 is to high a quality of a firearm for this to happen time after time. Good Luck.
