If you are looking to defend your Castle, I see no reason why you should spend anything more than the cost of this gun. The 500 is Mil Spec, and has a huge range of aftermarket accessories to choose from. I purchased it on a Friday and it came in about a week later. I have the weapon equipped with the pistol grip and have found it very easy and accurate to shoot from the hip with. For a man my size (6ft just shy of 300lbs), recoil doesn't present a problem at all, however for smaller people they may want a 20 gauge or non-magnum ammo/ reduced recoil loads, as the kick from this gun (or any 12-gauge) is tremendous power to be putting through your arm as a new shooter. I have two kids to defend, so I use Winchester 3" mag rounds with #7 birdshot. It will punch a serious hole in the baddie but it won't go through the wall and into my kids bedroom. I've shot this gun hundreds of times and cleaned it several, it's simply to disassemble and very, very low maintenance. at 2 in the morning all I have to do is rack a few, aim it center of the hallway and boom, bye bye baddie. Personal preference, but I don't think anyone in a home defense situation has enough wit at 2 in the morning to do everything it takes to get a pistol ready and aimed, and then have enough time to aim and make the shots count, when you can do it all in one shot from a shotgun. I'm not a gun nut, and this is the only shotgun I have for home defense, my remmy and winnie are both for skeet and hunting, and I think they should stay that way, so this gun's amazing simplicity and low cost, low maintenance approach to home defense is a win win for anyone who purchases it.
