Good, Bad and Ugly.

Picked up this gun about two hours ago and have not done any hard core disassembly/cleaning but a cursory examination reveals the following: First, the good: When I pulled it out of the box and saw it had a hex receiver, I knew it was coming home with me. My roll of the dice ended up being an Izhevsk 1920 M91 (ex) Dragoon with mostly clear markings. Bolt looks nice, cycles and locks up nice and headspace is good, but I don't think it's the original bolt. Trigger is creepy and heavy (as expected) but has a nice smooth and consistent non-gritty pull and good break. Loose in the box also were oil/solvent can, tools and surprisingly nice bayonet (although not original to the Dragoon model from pictures I have seen).

Now, the bad: Gun has been updated to 91/30 specs with newer stock, hooded front sight post (from open blade), rear sight leaf, barrel bands, etc. Butt plate appears to have a more recently numbered matching SN. Floor plate SN is struck out and renumbered to match receiver. Right side of hex receiver has an inch long scratch and stock has no cracks but is pretty dinged up and mismatched. Bore is dark but rifling looks strong and I don't see any pitting but closer inspection may reveal more.

The ugly: It's been counterbored!

Overall, I'm satisfied with what I got for the price. I would grade this gun as "Good" per NRA grading definitions. I'm disappointed the gun is not "Excellent" as advertised, but I am happy I got something unexpected and somewhat unusual. I sense a long, tumultuous love/hate relationship with this gun. Luckily I have lots of equally ugly corrosive surplus ammo to take out my aggression with!
