New Surplus Walther P-1/P-38
[P1]
$386.00
by Chip B Date Added: Saturday 11 February, 2012
Received my gun yesterday, 8 days after ordering. As for the pistol itself, it had some light scuffing and came in dry as a bone -but zero rust to be found. After breaking down and giving it a good oiling and wipedown, it looks about like I expected. Mine was the P38 with the hex steel cross pin between the take down lever and the slide release to support the aluminum frame, which seems to be more sought after. The pistol shipped with one magazine. Function appears perfect, and the action is smooth. From pictures posted on the Walther forums, these seem to be a mixed bag. 3 out of 4 are in about the shape mine came in, a few have come in very rough. A word of advice to anyone buying used/surplus guns from Bud's -they are happy to work with you if you refuse the transfer on a gun you have a problem with. Once you transfer ownership, it is your gun! This policy is more than fair, just call Bud's if you get a beater before having your FFL transfer the gun to you.
The P1/P38 is a classic design, and a well made shooter. Sights are primitive and they aren't made to shoot +P ammo. Use standard 9mm factory ammo or reloads, and it should shoot great. I'll put some rounds downrange with mine tomorrow, unless there are problems (which I don't suspect) this was a solid 4 star purchase. It wasn't in factory new condition, but it wasn't one of those surplus guns that looked like it had been bounced around in a crate for the last 50 years, either. For $400, it met my expectations.
