Russian M44 Mosin Nagant Excellent 7.62x54R
by Jon A Date Added: Thursday 26 September, 2013
Mine came in worse condition than I expected, but it's been really fun to take apart completely, and clean with ballistol. It came with some very light rust on all the parts and after cleaning everything up it looks beautiful. Just lots of time and love. Mine had matching serial numbers, which I didn't care about, but now that I have them, it's nice. I did a complete disassembly and poured steaming water and simple green into a bucket to soak all the parts and then wiped them down to get off most of the cosmoline. But the inside of the barrel was still caked in cosmoline. I hear shooting a few rounds to get it hot will make it just dip out of the barrel, but I couldn't get ammo or make it to a range. I used enough patches for 10 normal cleaning jobs and as the inside of the barrel got cleaner and cleaner, I'm really impressed with how beautiful and sharp the rifling is on this weapon. The stock is in pretty good condition, but I'm still going to refinish it just to smooth it a little bit and get the cosmoline out that's soaked into the wood. I'm 24 and have 30 guns but this is my first milsurp rifle and I think I'll be buying a few more. Working on these guns is a lot of fun and there are tons of great videos on youtube to help you sporterize or refinish your weapons. The extra $100 to get the m44 over the 91/30 is well worth it to have something more compact with the swinging bayonet. That thing is gnarly. Definitely recommend these guns. I haven't seen many others, and they were not priced any better than Bud's.
