How can so much power be contained in such a small package?
The Federal American Eagle 327 Fed Mag 100 gr. Soft Point ammo is extremely powerful for just being a "32". Accuracy was superb and the ammo performs better than expected. I did my normal series of testing of the ammo for performance.
I utilized Ballistic Gelatin (BG) with firing from a rest 10 feet from point of impact. The 100 gr. SP bullet penetrated 18.25" with a strikingly wicked wound channel. The recovered slug expanded to .421" which is a 31% increase in size, and weighed in at 92.45gr. which is a loss of 7.55 gr.
The next test has 4 layers of Army Wool Blanket which measured 1/4" thick in front of the ballistic gelatin. Firing again from 10' the bullet penetrated 16.1" and expanded to .405", a 26.6% increase in size and weighed in at 93.6 gr. which is a loss of 6.4 gr. There were very little flecks of wool from the blanket inside the BG but was not picked up by the Soft Point bullet, unlike the effects of a Hollow Point bullet acting as a "cookie cutter" on the fabric.
My overall opinion of this cartridge is that it would suffice very well as a self-defense cartridge, being very accurate, have excellent penetration without being over penetrating and have very good weight retention and expansion.
In general shooting, from a Taurus 605 framed .327 Magnum 2" bbl. revolver, the recoil of the firearm was 'strikingly felt', unlike any other handgun I have fired (I have shot everything from .22LR up to .44 Magnums; .32ACP to 10mm & .45ACPs). After three or four shots, Once the factory hard rubber grips were changed to Hogue Rubber grips, shooting is much more tame, not unlike a .357 Mag snubbie.
This is my standard cartridge for the 327 Magnum! I highly recommend it!
