After having read various reviews of this unit, and having used a loader in the past, I wanted to be very careful when using this unit for the first time and to make sure I was well acquainted with it before trying to load some mags.
The unit I received is named Champion 10/22 magazine loader.
I'm happy to report that I found this unit does work very well WHEN CAREFULLY PREPARED for loading a magazine.
I have used this unit to load Butler Creek Steel Lip mags and the stock Ruger 10 round rotary magazine, and as mentioned above, WHEN CAREFULLY PREPARED for loading, there were no problems loading either types of magazine.
I gave this unit 4 'stars' and would have given it 5 stars if it did not require careful preparation to load it. It must be carefully operated or else it may likely not work correctly.
Q: 'What does 'WHEN CAREFULLY PREPARED' mean?
A: This unit should be treated like a delicate piece of machinery, especially since it is constructed of plastic. If you are looking to quickly jam a magazine into this unit, and begin cranking, you may experience problems, and may want to look for something else. The key to getting this unit to work is to make sure the magazine is inserted correctly ( don't force it ), and also make sure that the first cartridge to feed is parallel to the magazine lips before beginning to crank on the knob. The best way i have found to do this is to make sure the feed/loading wheel is blocking the first cartridge before starting to load, so that it has no chance to move around and become misaligned to the magazine. Above all, DO NOT crank on the unit if it does not appear to be loading. If that happens, the cartridge is most likely misaligned and you may either dent the cartridge or break the unit. In that case, STOP CRANKING, take the magazine out, remove any jammed cartridges and start over.
My best advice then is to work slowly and carefully, don't force the unit, and it should work fine.
