This is an excellent combat 45. I had mine for 10 years, and the only failures I ever had were related to my learning curve in reloading, if you get my drift. One time, I loaded a squib (no powder) and the primer shot the bullet into the barrel but not out. The next round (not a squib!) ran into that & bulged the barrel, ruining it. But it didn't blow up or hurt me. That is a testament to this gun's good design. They designed it not only to function well under normal circumstances, but also forseeable problems.
It has been very accurate. (especially with reloads) The magazines are of high quality and drop-free. Since they are single stack and are only made by Ruger, they always feed reliably. They are a bit on the expensive side to buy extras, $35 each.
The slide is heavy, which really helps keep the gun controllable under recoil, and follow-up shots are no problem. Although there are no cocking serrations, the safety lever is an even better grip for racking the slide.
All ammo I tried functioned reliably with this gun, including the highly-rated Federal Hydra-Shock 185 gr. +P HP, which I kept it stoked with for home defense.
There are only two potential downsides to this pistol:
1) The DA trigger pull is long, heavy, and quite stacked. The SA pull is pretty good, but not target grade. It is easy to make hits SA, but the first one, you just have to aim high, because there doesn't seem to be a way to make it hit PoA. This is why I took off a star. I believe it is a common fault of most combat DA auto pistols.
2) 7 round magazine. My opinion is that if I need more than 7 rounds of 45, there are other problems than the gun. Besides, auto pistols with drop-free magazines are VERY quick to reload. No extended magazines are made for this gun to my knowledge.
The stock grips are good, but Hogues are great. That, and a sight upgrade are the only upgrades I would do to this rugged, reliable, and accurate gun.
