Springfield XDM95259BHC XD(M) Competition 19+1 9mm 5.25\" Fiber Optic
by Brock B Date Added: Tuesday 25 October, 2011
The 5-star rating is for the Springfield 9mm 5.25 Competition Black 9mm firearm ONLY and is not applicable to anything else. This is my 5th Springfield Armory handgun and my second XDm (I also own the 3.8 in .40). This is one fine and fun firearm to shoot. It feels and grips just like every other XDm out there (they all feel great to me). I keep the medium backstrap on it... I've tried the large and small but the medium fits me just right. For its size... it feels rather light (I'm sure due to the lightning cut in the slide) but is also extremely well balanced. The longer sight radius makes a noticeable difference in your accuracy... I can tell a significant difference as I move up from my 3" XDsc to my 3.8" XDM to this 5.25"! As many will attest to... the trigger pull is on the heavy side. I don't have a way of testing the pull but it is just as heavy (if not slightly heavier since it hasn't been worked in) as my XDM 3.8 .40. The trigger pull is also long, the over-travel is substantial and the reset is too much (in my opinion) for competition. However I can't complain about any of that. If people are gonna use this gun for competitions... they are gonna want to have a trigger job done on it to meet their precise specifications and preferences. It doesn't make sense for Springfield Armory to factory install a trigger job before these things are shipped out since most people are just gonna turn around and tweak this triggers to their liking and to meet their exact needs anyways. Springfield would have to put a premium on the from-the-factory trigger job anyways so why would you want to pay for a trigger job twice? I've ordered the drop-in trigger kit from PRP that is supposed to cut the pull weight from 7+ down to around 3-ish (with their competition springs)... it will also reduce the travel, over-travel and reset of the trigger. That will make this gun pretty perfect for competition at that point. I plan on running USPSA competitions with it.

The price was ok... but after you tack on the 3% upcharge for not using cash (which many other companies don't do) and the 5% upcharge when financing for a *mandatory* life-time warranty (for a firearm that already has a lifetime warranty from the factory)... the final price isn't anything to brag about. I knew this going into the purchase though so I can't and don't blame Buds for it. I figured it would be a quick ship like they have in the past but it took 11 days (7-business) before it shipped. I know... I could have paid an additional $20-$25 to become a "VIP" to have it shipped same day but when did customers have to start paying a fee to become very important to companies? I'm sure it is a great and justifiable service to many people out there but *I* just don't feel like I should have to pay an additional fee to be very important to a company. If I'm not already important to them... I'm not gonna pay them more to become important... but I digress.

The final price, wait for shipping and somewhat poor factory trigger does not detract at all from this being a sweet handgun though and that is why I rated the HANDGUN 5-stars! Just keep in mind that if you are gonna use this as a competition gun... you are probably gonna want to spring for a competition-worthy trigger job... but most people would know that going in to this purchase anyways so it shouldn't come as a surprise. Have fun with this shooter... it is a blast!
