I have been told some older barrels can only use lead shot. Is steel shot allowed in this barrel?

Joseph, Absolutely you can shoot steel shot out of this barrel. Problems if your trying to use full or extra full chokes with steel you may get choke area grooves or bulges. What happens is wad slows down, gas is still fast and bunches shot and may bulge choke area. Modified or larger choke should be no problem. Also some steel shot has buffering beads(Styrofoam) in shell to cushion and help prevent grooving in choke area.

James remington Recommends ONLY Rem choke barrels for shot LARGER than #2 shot Theses rem choke barrels re fine with the larger steel shot "If you have barrels manufactured after 1963, with fixed Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes, you may shoot up to size #2 steel shot. ********The use of steel shot larger than size #2 is only recommended in modern barrels with the Rem Choke system."

Joseph, Remington says all barrels since 1950 are okay for steel, BUT only #2 or smaller steel shot and modifed or less fixed choke.

yes the Rem choke barrels are safe with steel shot but do not use extra full choke tubes with steel shot and the larger steel sizes should not use the full chokes steel does not compress in the chokes like lead shot does
