.45 acp

Postby Big Country on Wed Mar 11, 2009 2:46 am

So I am picking up my new Taurus Millenium pt145 pro tomorrow, and I am tickled to death with this gun. I recently took my ccdw class, and decided that my .357 was a lil too big to be packing (haha didn't take much deciding!) I am new to semi-auto's and I was wanting some opinions or suggestions on a good target load for this gun, and a good home defense/carry load. I have been shooting Fiocchi in my revolver, and I love it, would this be good for my new .45? Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

with all the .45 guys on here i figured someone could give me some advice on this. I went with the Corbon 185 gr jacketed hollow point. Shot a few rounds to see how they would shoot through my 3.5inch barrel, and they shot fine. Wasn't too keen on the $28 for 20, but I didn't have many choices. Anyone shot something different that they liked more than the Corbon's??

I'm your "huckleberry". I've used Corbons and about everything else in various 45's. The lighter bullets (165, 185) are usually better loads for guns with less than a 4" barrel.
In my Sig 220, I use 230, 230+P, 185+P, and 200 lead SWC's. It will even function flawlessly with the Speer 45acp shotshells.
Good thing about 45 acp guns is you can always use the standard 230 hardball load, if that's all you could get, and still have a respectable defense load.
Main thing, use something which will function without flaw in your gun, for at least 200 rounds.

Yeah, I know. I saw "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp" both Sun., for the umpteenth time. I like Kilmer's lines: "He was just too high strung", "I'm afraid his heart just couldn't take the strain".
I've had a lot of 45acp guns; The Sig 220 I have now is a great gun.

I'll admit, I almost went with the Pt140 instead, but im happy with my decision. Hell ammo is so scarce now a days, I don't think it matters much. And I kind of liked the idea of havin a big bore gun. Even with the compact size, I have to wear larger shirts to conceal the gun. I have a side leather holster that i just put my belt through, and it's pretty comfortable. Here's a question for ya, If someone were to see the outline of your gun say through your shirt, that wouldnt be considered "brandishing" would it? If theres any question, i try to wear a thin jacket, but these Carhartt shirts have been doing the trick pretty good. May end up having to get something even smaller, .380 or similar for a pocket gun, but I just like the idea of havin this side cannon with me.

I carry my Colt defender 90% of the time, all year long. Over sized T-shirts or a T under and an over button down shirt with the tail out and sometimes unbuttoned usually works just fine. Nothing makes me more comfortable than knowing I have my best friend with 7 rnds of 230 +p hydshk acp on my side. :D

I don't think that's "brandishing"; brandishing means taking the gun out and waving it around. But, if the gun "prints" where most people could readily identify that it's a gun, then it's not really concealed. My CWL is being processed( 60-90 days in WNC!), and I'm experimenting and hoping I can hide my little 638 S&W!

It gets warm here in Florida and most everything I carried previously printed through T-shirts during the summer months. I actually kept a Sig SP2022 for a spell although it was large but VERY effiecient and reliable. I then went to a .357 Taurus 651. Heavy little beast but again practical. Well, 45s became the norm for me after my wife gave me my first 1911 Taurus. I could actually carry this full size pistol without anyone picking it out through a T-Shirt. Being that the pistol is so thin it conceals nicely. I did try the PT 145 but it printed easily. I got out of that pistol fast. Although reliable it just did not conceal as well as I liked. Now I have found what works best for me. Any light weight commander or officer sized single stack 1911. They conceal so easy and are very comfortable to carry, either IWB or out. Current choice is the Sig Nitron RCS. Ammo I use is mixed between magsafe defender 96 gr with something like 2000 FPS and 700 ft/lbs yet does not over penetrate. Great ammo for crowded places or for inside the home defense. I would hate to have anything go further then needed and possibly penetrate several walls and such. Thought gives me chills. Next is Speer GD in 230 gr. Have had that one around for a while. Typically used in backup magazines. New ammo I just picked up is by Federal and is the FMEJ (letters maybe mixed here, (which is a full metal expanding jacket)) and highly recommended for feeding reliability.

I just got a Glock 36; I have it loaded with 185 +P Gold Dots in one mag; the other carries 230 Gold Dots.
As for concealed carry, I'm looking for the proper holster; I'm using a thin "moleskin" Michaels iwb right now, and the Glock hides well in it. I'll either get a Hume or a Mika.
