S&W 637 Airweight

Postby Q on Sat Nov 08, 2008 11:35 pm

Picked up a Smith & Wesson 637 Airweight last week and took it to the range for the first time today...sweet little gun. The function is smooth, the craftsmanship is crisp and clean, it looks good, feels good (though small) in the hand.

Recoil is...well...brisk. ;) I ran several rounds of 130 grain round nose target through it, as well as a few +p loads, and have a nice blister on the inside of my right thumb, right where it rested on the upper bulge of the rubber grip. I will add some nice grips to it in the future...really think that a set of custom grey/black laminated wood combat grips would look great on it and give me a better resting point for my pinky finger...might help that blister point on the inside thumb too, depending.

Accuracy wasn't bad for a snappy little snub. Did some firing really trying to aim for the 10 ring, did some firing just looking over the top of the barrel, and did some firing keeping the gun low and tucked in close to me, shoulders square to the target.

I think it will make a great concealed carry piece. A Desantis Nemesis pocket holster is on the way, as well as 2 speedloaders and a case for them. You can get into this gun in the very low $400's, there are some rebates out there, and it's a Smith. I think that's a pretty good choice for a pocket gun.

Cant beat a jframe, I have the 360 scandium and love it. Easy to conceal, iwb appendix is how I cary mine mine. Just watch shooting some of the heavier rounds like the 158 grain. You may see the bullet creep out of the brass.

I've had all kinds of S&W J frames, but the one I have now is the 638 Airweight Bodyguard. I'm in the process of trying to get my ccwl, and will try to qualify with, and use this gun.
I'm used to recoil, but me and some others have found the light frames are not as accurate as the steel guns, as a rule.
I'm alright, I just look this way!

It all depends on distance and size of target. Here in KY it's 7 yards to a full size silhouette. :D
