Smith and Wesson 686

Postby wabcol on Tue Dec 30, 2008 6:17 pm

Greetings: I am a new forum member. I am also relatively new to shooting. My experience has been limited to regularly shooting a S&W 22lf revolver with a 6 inch barrel and occassionally shooting a snub nose .38. I have completed a basic gun safety class and my application for a CCW license is pending.

I am preparing to order from Bud's a S&W 686 which will be used primarily as a range gun and for home protection. I am undecided between a 4" and a 6" barrel. I do not have the ability to test either before purchase. Can anyone help me with understanding the pros and cons of the 4" and 6" barrel in the 686.

By the way this will not be a carry weapon except possibly when hiking or camping. I intend to get a S&W 442 or 642 for carry. Thank you for your time and help.

I would go with the 4 inch barrel, it will be a bit easier to use in home defense. Be a bit easier to carry when hiking too. I feel the longer barrels, 6 or more, are more for hunting. Not to say you shouldnt use a 6 inch barrel for home defense just a 4inch feels more pointable and more balanced in my hand than a 6 inch.

Man this kills me but I have to agree with Chuck  (Hows work been this week buddy?) The accuracy you pick up in 2 inches is minimal at best. The 4 inch barrel will be much more versatile in the long run. I've owned a couple of what you might call hunting pistols, I would go with at least 8" for that. :D
