The smallest round I'm willing to carry is the Hornady Critical Defense 110 gr 38 special. I'm planning on buying a Smith & Wesson or Tauraus .22 for target practice at the range but would not feel that comfortable carrying it concealed in some of the rougher neighborhoods and parks I frequent. I'm a strong believer that accuracy or shot placement trumps size of round. I think you should carry the round that you most practice with; whatever that round may be. I'd rather hit a two legged predator with a .22 to the face, neck or center chest, than miss with a .45 that I seldom used. Practice, practice, practice!

Ohiodan i agree and i have said that practice is the key . then shot placement . then ill worry about stopping power . it is my contention that give me something smaller to stay on target .. but that being said i also like the large cal. slow roun ds like my Charter .44 special. no over penatration. no excessive vol. and will reck someone's whole week. But i also like at close range the .22 WWMR in a soft point .

bigdad5: Very well said. I think the .44 special is an underappreciated round. The problem with typical concealed carry handguns is that they tend to be small and light weight. A friend of mine recently bought a new Ruger LCP in .380 with a Crimson Trace laser. He loves it and feels it is a great "pocket pistol." He does concede however that the relatively tame .380 round snaps rather painfully in a pistol that weighs only 12 ozs. I own a S&W M60 .38 special that is my "always gun." It weighs 19 ozs. I find that with an Uncle Mike's rubber grip it is easy to control and shoot. If I put the smaller boot grip on, it is a little more "snappy" when fired. Of course, the boot grip makes it easier to conceal. There are always going to be tradeoffs when carrying concealed. Every individual has to determine what works best for them and the only way to determine that, is to spend time at the range. Again; practice, practice, practice! Each of us will be able to determine what works best for us after we spend time at the range. For some, it may be the .45 and others it may be a .380. My point is that there is no right or wrong in general. There is only what works best for you as an individual. Good shooting to all of you and be safe.

Ohiodan ,, thanks for noticeing..

When i put out a post relateing to the shooting sports i want it to make since even to the untrained non shooter. You may guess my friend that it is the only way we can preserve shooting sports for the future and all generations. Today for instance i took a big city girl out for a hour and a half of range fireing . She was a never ever shooter and when she was done her exact words were " I think we have just found a new family sport. By the time we were done she was hitting the quart coffee cans with the singal shot .22 rifle. She then called her hubby and i yelled into the phone that i had made a monster and he better be a good boy .. lmao .. I actually do love to see woman on the range and in the field. You see gentelman with out the involvement of woman in shooting sports there will be no shooting sports for the future. And thats what it is all about involvement to perserve what we have . I know this has nothing to do with the smallest round we all would trust but sometimes you have to vear off and then come back later. lol''''

Covering a much earlier post I agree with the buddy system while hiking in bear country. If I am armed with any caliber pistol an my buddy is not I have a fighting chance. Step one shoot the bear, Step two shoot the buddy in the foot, Step three both bear and buddy have a gun shot wound, are running on wet ground and do not have to wipe poo from their eyes. :D

LMAO budsdriver well said but remember it is not very smart to stand there and trade rounds . The smart thing is make sure you do keep there head"s down and then your self and family if nessary the heck out of danger . And ammo conservation is the key .

Well i hunt rabbit with my .22mag and i love the round. I find that it doesnt misfire as much as the LR. I carry a .22magnum revolver on occasion.
