  • Which would be better first (and probably only) shotgun this H&R (which I believe is a clearance model now) or this Maverick 88? https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/43865 Its not for a kid, I'm over 50 but new to guns. I don't hunt, I would just like a shotgun for fun and possible home defense, Dont want to spend a lot.

  • Hi Stuart, I agree with Randy and Joel on the Maverick. However, If you don't hunt and want a fun/defense shotgun, I would recommend something with much better handling and shorter barrel. The majority of "Defense" Shotguns have 18.5 to 20" barrels. I would recommend : budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/2084_2108/products_id/97945/Stevens+320SEC+20GA+18.5+PG+BEAD or even better this with "Ghost ring Sights" : budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/97946

  • Of the two I recommend the maverick 88 which is a Budget Mossberg 500. the Mossberg/maverick reliability and the availability of aftermarket accessories tip the scale for me. Also I know that if I have a issue I can get parts for the Maverick/Mossberg

  • I agree with Randy P. on the Mossberg 500. Very simple to operate for a first time shotgun owner. I used this model in the military and really liked it. It’s a real workhorse.
