Just curious as to how the Ca. compliant version differs from the standard one? I live in a free state, but don't want to buy a Ca. model if it has some deficiency.

no real differences it just means that the specific model has been submitted and tested to be allowed to be sold in CA

Ca generally has requirements such as "Magazine Disconnect" Safeties or some other cheesy requirement to limit sale of firearms there. In this case, this pistol has the same features of non restricted models which simply have not been approved in CA yet.
