Warren - Since you didn't mention the brand of your AR or model number, then all we here can do is 'guess'. Some AR's in 7.62X39 use AK style mags, some use AR style mags made for 7.62X39. The best suggestion I can give is consult your owners manual, or contact the manufacturer of your rifel directly. You should have received a magazine with the rifle, though, and from that .. if it works ... you should be able to tell what type mag it is fairly easily. Another clue - where is you mag release. If it is in the typical AR location, it uses AR mags. If in front of the trigger, it uses AK mags.
No you need AR 7.62X39 specific magazines. Sometimes they are hard to find. I get mine from PSA.

Warren, this depends entirely on your rifle type. A few AR's are built to take AK Mags. Most take AR pattern 7.62x39 Magazines such as : budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/82709/promag+cola-20+ar-15+magazine+30rd+762x39mm+blued+steel
