The SR-556 uses a gas piston system while the AR-556 uses the more traditional direct impingement gas system of most AR-15 pattern guns.

L D, The AR-556 has a gas-impingement system, just like the original AR-15 rifle design and the Ruger’s SR series – use a gas piston and op-rod to unlock the bolt after firing.
