When the first all-steel small frame (J) revolver was introduced in 1950, it became an instant success. Originally named the Chiefs Special by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, it has become the first choice for those who insist on an all steel, small frame revolver with greater recoil control and proven performance.  The Smith & Wesson J-Frame has become the most popular small frame personal defense revolver on the market. With decades of reliable performance to its credit, the J-frame line offers models capable of firing .22 LR, .22 Magnum®, .38 S&W Special and the more powerful .357 Magnum® loads.  Smith & Wesson offers these revolvers from our production, M&P, Pro Series, and Classics lines in three diverse hammer designs; internal, exposed and shrouded.

I had a choice. 340 or 640. I went with the 640 due to the extra heft and yes I do carry 357 in it. Obviously not the mountain loads, but regular 357 can be shot from this revolver. 38 special for training or the recoil sensitive. This is a great carry or back up. I had a tritium front sight installed and couldn't be happier.

Worth overpaying for. It's a 357 mag J fram Smith & Wesson, what else is there to say?

Smith 640 357 mag/38 Xlnt heavy weight pistol. Truley snag free with internal hammer. feels good and well made. Will last forever. Nice compact model and good hand grip. So happy with this I bought another one a little while later.

Outstanding revolver for close quarters protection. No exposed hammer and minimal sights are perfect for intending application. The action is smooth enough and the finish is very good for modern standards. Would have preferred the cylinder be cut for moon clips and the key lock be removed however neither are deal breakers. My only niggle concerns the grips: they are comfortable enough however for my needs on a revolver of this type I like something more compact and will be replacing the supplied large rubber grips. Overall very pleased.

Very nice firearm I purchased and had engraved for my daughter's college graduation gift. Excellent revolver.

This was my first purchase from Buds. Traded two firearms toward it, and was given a very fair price. Love my 640, it’s my favorite ccw. Compact and very concealable, but with a hell of a punch. Very accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

Great carry weapon. A little snappy with 357’s but it’s comforting to know revolver will handle magnums if needed. Practice, practice and practice some more. Gun will not fail you.

This is an excellent small revolver. Mine has perfect lockup and timing, no end shake, and a perfect cylinder-to-forcing cone gap. And these revolvers are built strongly to keep those key parameters exactly right after prolonged heavy use. The trigger smoothed out very nicely after one session on the range. Made of stainless steel, this is one of the heaviest J-frame Centennials, helping it tame the recoil of the .357 Magnum round and +P .39 Special rounds and letting you get follow-on rounds on target faster. While the .357 round is still a handful, it is manageable; the .38 Special +P is even more manageable. Keep in mind, though, that these revolvers are not designed for a lot of plinking on the range. As they say, these are made to be carried a lot and shot a little. The Mdl 640 is a bit heavier than the Mdl 442 or 642, so it has a bit more weight for carry, which might bother some folks in terms of carrying the gun, but will reward you when it comes time to shoot the gun. If you want a very light weight J Frame, take a look at the Mdl 442 or 642; they are easier to carry for long periods of time and easier to conceal.

I am unable to carry any handgun IWB due to back and hip problems and my XD doesn't carry concealed as it prints under my jacket. The S&W 640 carries very well in my pants pocket and deploys quick and easy. I practice with 38 spl and low end 357 from my local "box" store. It shoots to point of aim up to 50'. On a good day, 4" groups standing and 2 1/2" off the bench. Excellent weapon, well worth the money.
