Buds has great prices, easy purchasing process with fast shipping! At the range I was impressed with the fit, balance and function of the Ruger GP100 #1766 .22LR revolver. Great sights, good trigger pull and grips.

Having owned the Ruger GP100 .22lr 4.2 for a couple of months, and firing several hundred rounds in that time, allows me to share from experience. Next to the GP100 .22lr (which took the place of a previously owned Ruger SP101 .22lr) in my safe is a 6” S&W 617, and several comparisons between these revolvers will be made in this review. The trigger pull weight of the GP100 .22lr is much improved over the Ruger SP101 .22lr. The double action pull does not strain my finger, and is quite comfortable. The Smith 617 may have a slightly lighter double action pull, but it is hard to say definitively without trigger pull gauge. The trigger profile on the GP100 is thinner than the 617 which lets me know if the pad of my finger has wandered. When squeezing from close to the knuckle, the pad of my index finger with get slightly pinched between the trigger and the frame. This is not a discomfort by any means and reinforces my preferred trigger form. The sights on the Ruger GP100 .22lr are fantastic. The fiber optic front sight was my first, and has resulted in three other revolvers, including the 617 getting the Hi Viz treatment. The adjustable rear sight blade came with a white outline aiding in an easy to acquire sight picture. This was not the case on the 617, which comes with a black rear blade and back front site. While some may prefer the all black set up, I painted the front blade red and ordered a white outlined rear blade for the 617 long before installing the Hi Viz. Another edge the Ruger has on the 617, and the SP101, is the factory grips. The GP100 fills my hand nicely, unlike the spartan factory grips of the 617, which had to be upgraded for my liking. Following the enjoyment of the factory sights and grips at a few range sessions, it came time for cleaning. This is a task that is much easier on the Smith 617. To remove the cylinder on the Ruger one must remove the grip, hammer, and trigger assembly. Only then will the cylinder crane assembly detach form the frame. To separate the cylinder, form the cylinder crane requires further disassembly. Finally, to remove the ejector from the cylinder requires a special tool. The S&W 617 has the GP100 beat in this area hands down. Simply remove the yoke screw and the cylinder and yoke/crane come out to be cleaned. The ejector on the smith can be removed with some care and a common bench vice. While this may not be a big concern for most, .22lr is a dirty ammo and cleaning will be necessary. Both guns have reminders of the era of their production marring their surfaces. The Smith with the internal lock hole next to the cylinder release, and the Ruger with the discrete, yet still unsightly when noticed, “READ INSTRUCTION MANUAL” roll marked on the bottom of the under lug. If one is in the undesirable position of having to decide between the GP100 .22lr and the Smith and Wesson 617 (my suggestion is owning both), I endorse the GP100 .22lr. for a general-purpose revolver to be enjoyed out of the box. The Ruger’s price was less that of the Smith 617 and Ruger provided features that did not motivate me to instantly upgrade the sights and grips. Finally, Bud’s is the best. Rarely is a better deal on a new firearm found, and their customer service has never left me desiring more.
