There are four variations of the Kel-Tec KSG, to include the original KSG, the KSG25 (designed for the European market), the KSG Tactical (designed for Class 3 dealers and requiring a tax stamp due to a 13.7 inch barrel) and the version I purchased, the KSG Compact. Even as non-traditional as any of the four options appear, all four variations at their core are classic bullpup 12-gauge, pump-action shotguns, meaning the pistol grip and the trigger are in front of the receiver action.
As such, beneath the 18.5 inch barrel reside two tubular magazines in parallel, with a switch lever, that hold various numbers of various sizes of shotgun ammunition. The KSG Compact holds 4+4+1 or 5+5+1 of 12 gauge ammunition, depending on choice of shell size, and I have ordered and stocked 3 inch shell ammunition, 2 3/4 inch shell ammunition and the 1 3/4 inch mini-shell ammunition. Due to COVID-19, I have had zero opportunity to shoot this weapon, so my review is limited to a pre-shooting experience.
Because the KSG has a smoothbore and a choked or open cylinder bore choke, I should be able to safely run the gamut of shotgun ammunition through it, including buckshot, slugs, birdshot, and do so (I have seen the supporting videos) with mixed loads. Each tube is loaded separately, using the switch lever to change between tubes, and allegedly any combination of ammunitions types can be loaded. The KSG Tactical comes standard with an 18.5 inch barrel with top and bottom Picatinny-style rails, and it uses a pump action mechanism, with the Tactical version shipping with a built-in foregrip housing a 450 lumen Kelt-Tec LED light with momentary switches (left and right hand oriented).
As far as build quality, the KSG is a menacing and non-reflective black matte finish, 26 inches long, weighing 7 pounds empty and roughly 8 1/2 pounds loaded (depending on shell type). Primary components are fabricated from 4140 steel, the stock is glass-reinforced nylon polymer and the twin tubes are then welded under the barrel. It feels solid and substantial, but not overtly heavy, and I have found the pump action to be easy to use, while being conscious of not shorting the pull, which is possible and obviously an issue if done with live rounds. I believe many of the reviews that complained of jams likely were due to short-pulling versus solidly pulling back entirely and intentionally doing so consistently. I also tightened up all screws on the KSG, as I had heard reviews about loose components, but overall, mine was solid and operated, minus ammunition, well and as expected.
I added a Sight Mark Wolverine SM26021 1x23 CSR Red Dot Site and it was an easy installation with the top Picatinny rail, and should prove useful for rapid rounds at the range, once I can get to one post-COVID. I am also adding Magpul BUIS flip-up front and rear open sights. I may also upgrade the included sling with something more soft touch to help counter the weight and pull of the KSG when loaded.
I will hopefully add to this review once I am able to load and shoot the KSG at the range, so more to come on the actual shooting and functioning.

A:Dwayne, yes Sir, this is a recent production version of the KSG NR shotgun. The only difference is the standard KSG has a higher tube capacity and the entire barrel is shrouded. This one is NFA Ready and once the $200 Tax Stamp is paid and paperwork completed you can shorten the un-shrouded barrel to your desired length.
