MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.
Real-world reliability is the most important feature any manufacturer can build into a firearm. That’s why it was the first priority when we set about developing the Browning Maxus. The Power Drive Gas System is designed to perform under harsh hunting and shooting conditions with a wide array of loads. But reliability isn’t the whole story. The Maxus delivers 18% less felt recoil for greater comfort, 44% less muzzle jump for more accurate follow-up shots, 19% faster bolt speed and 24% faster locktime than the nearest competitor. Unequalled reliability and features, all found in the finest, most reliable gas-operated autoloader ever to swing on a bird.

This shotgun is a disappointment. First, the gun has nice wood, great bluing, and okay workmanship. I shot a box of target loads through it and had no failures to fire or cycle. The trigger is great at a little over 6 pounds and crisp. I say the workmanship is okay and not great because the forearm is sloppy. It moves from side to side and up and down. It might just be a distraction, but at this price point I expected better. I own four Browning shotguns, two Auto 5s and a Citori all over 30 years old and a BPS that is around 15 years old. The workmanship on the Auto 5s is far better than on the Maxus. I’m old and I have shoulder problems so I was looking for a gun with less recoil. I was sucked in by the advertising and reports about how soft shooting this gun was. It was all a lot of BS. They can say all they want about the gas system, the barrel design, or the fancy recoil pad, but it all comes down to weight. This gun weighs 6lbs 13ozs. It kicks like a mule. With target loads it produces far more felt recoil and muzzle jump than my Auto 5 (both 12 gauge with 26” barrels), and the Auto 5 doesn’t even have a recoil pad. I would not recommend this gun to anyone. My recommendation would be to find a well maintained or reconditioned old Auto 5. The price would be about the same, and you’ll end up with a far better shotgun.

Great shotgun for upland hunting and clay games. The wood quality, barrel bluing, and receiver finish is all very good, however the trigger is not great and the plastic trigger guard feels cheap. Reliability with cheap 1oz target loads has been perfect so far. This model has a very sharp shell lifter that can draw blood if you’re not careful, but I was able to remedy that problem with some metal polish and my dremel. Overall it is a great shotgun at this price point!
