[5 of 5 Stars!]Previous reviews have covered how accurate and beautifully machined this rifle is and it very much so- no question about it. This review will deal only with what you get for the version that costs $1301 as compared to the version that costs $1024 (basic Patrol). Sig, like many firearms manufacturers probably doesn't list it on their web site either. You may need to call them directly to get exact contents of pkg. We ship exactly how the manufacturer ships."
Basically if you look at the PDF website at SIG, that is what you get except that it now comes with Troy micro front and rear BUIS and not the red dot. American rifleman did a review way back in 1/2010 (http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/sig516-review-3/) and indeed if you look at Bud's website (they do have a disclaimer) the rifle shown seems to be what this article describes. The difference:There is no Magpul MIAD pistol grip ($35) but just an MOE-K grip in black. There is no Lewis Machine & Tool SOPMOD enhanced six-position buttstock ($260) but instead you get a basic MOE Magpul that does rattle a bit but is good enough to fire the rifle accurately. There is no Yankee Hill Machine co. phantom flash supressor (http://yhm.net/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=7&zenid=d33b3753cff9dbf14cee95452495d619). These upgrades would have made the $1300 price tag seem a bargain but instead now it makes more sense since what you really get for that price is the SIG Sauer-branded Troy Industries MRF BattleRail (retail $179.99).
The main difference is the forearm guard and that's pretty much of what you pay an extra for although as a caveat this reviewer has previous limited experience between the two versions and can only compare this rifle to the basic patrol seen at the local Academy sports and outdoors. It's probably worth it as the Troy MRF battlerail that this comes with may not be a drop in and in at least one blog, the author stated that SIG said it had to be fitted and machined when the rifle was sent back to SIG for this upgrade, for a premium. The SIG 516 does not come with a D ring but one has to wonder if aftermarket 7" rails would work if one decides to buy the basic patrol version.
Notwithstanding the fact that it did not come with the items as pictured, one positive result was there was little excuse not to mod and 'upgrade' this rifle with Magpul ACS-L buttstock, MIAD grip, AFG2, XTM Modular Full Profile Picatinny Rail Cover all in FDE/black. After all, we reserve the right to keep, bear and in some cases, embellish our arms.
Overall a good bargain.Show More Reviews...
