Smith & Wesson Model 500 Overview

As soon as I see one of the Smith & Wesson 500 Magnums, in my minds eye, I see the same scenario played out over and over. A hiker, out in the Montana backcountry (is there anything else in Montana?), happens upon a grizzly as he rounds a corner. A twig snaps underneath his hiking boot, and it is on! The startled grizzly charges, bearing teeth, jaws popping, slobber slinging, and claws that are ready for business. At this point, the hiker opens his coat, revealing a Smith & Wesson 500 Magnum, and simply lays his hand on the hand grip and shakes his head from side to side, but does not utter the word “no”. The wide eyed grizzly screeches to a halt, at about 20 feet away, and begins to mumble something to himself. As you strain to hear what the bear is saying, you soon recognize that he is reciting “The Lord’s Prayer”.



When it comes to foot pounds of energy released with a vengeance, and annihilating your adversary with extreme prejudice…..this is your weapon. First introduced in 2003, and primarily designed to “stop the unstoppable”, the Model 500 is advertised by Smith & Wesson to be the most powerful production handgun in the world today. There may be some larger, but they are custom guns, not production guns. In recoil comparison, firing the .44 magnum and the .500 magnum, is about the same amount difference between the .38 special and the 44 magnum. Yeah, that kind of difference. This behemoth has more knock down at 125-150 yards, than a .44 magnum has at the end of the muzzle. Afraid yet? You better be. Whether you’re on either end of it, chances are you’re not going to be crazy about the outcome.



The Smith & Wesson Model 500, is stainless steel and is available in a 4 inch, a 8-¾ inch, and a 10-½ inch barrel. It is a 5-shot (like you’re really going to need that many), SA/DA action. The heavy rubberized grips only mean that you won’t bruise badly, even though your hands will never work right again. There is a muzzle break available to keep you from smacking yourself in the face with the barrel, but actually being unconscious in the aftermath might be a godsend.



I am really only having some fun with this article. This is a beast of a pistol, but it can be managed and accurately shot. The grips and compensator on the barrel, calm it down just enough to where a seasoned handgunner need not be afraid. This pistol IS NOT for a first time shooter!
