Just when you think that you’ve seen it all, and that there is nothing new under the sun…….along comes the Taurus Curve. I certainly understand the concept, to build the first “form fitting” weapon for the concealed carry market. Concealability has always been at the top of everybody’s list, and this offering is certainly the next step in the evolution of pocket pistols.
I have not owned or shot one of the Taurus Curve pistols……...yet. Yet, being the operative word, because I no doubt will. I have held a few, and talked with several owners. I have always carried in a billfold holster or an ankle holster. I think that the thought of holding a curved handgun, gives you the feeling that it would be terribly awkward, but that is simply not the case.
I hear people crying all the time about the .380ACP not being enough stopping power, but that is ridiculous. The graveyards are full of people who would strongly disagree. If I practice, and I do, I can feel as well armed with a .380ACP as I do a .45ACP. If you can hit your target, and especially if you choose a well designed personal protection ammunition, it is all over ……….except for the medical examiner and the toe tag.
The Curve is a pistol advertised as, “the gun you wear”, and it is comfortable. The 3-inch barrel is certainly enough to hold down “dessert plate” sized groupings. I think that the redeeming quality that makes this ultra comfortable, ultra reliable, pistol really work, is the onboard LaserLyte laser. Personally, I would have preferred a green laser, but the red is fine. A laser does two things, first it intimidates. I’ve never felt comfortable, or seen anyone else who is comfortable, looking down and seeing a laser dot on their body. At that point you realize that the only thing left is “the bang”. The second thing, of course, is target acquisition. The locked breech action is not new to Taurus, and the DAO trigger is certainly something that they have a lot of practice with. The belt clip is probably something that most will not use, but it is there if you don’t want to remove it. The “loaded chamber” indicator is a real plus also.
Is this the wave of the future? Will other gun manufacturers copy this idea and have to pay Taurus a royalty every time. I guess that only time will tell, but for right now, this is tomorrow’s gun….today.
