When you get this gun make sure the first thing you do is clean it, mine was absolutely soaked in packing grease, not really a negative. The gun functioned flawlessly after I put about 200 Rounds of 9mm FMJ through it. This gun is an absolute great value and should be heavily considered when purchasing a single stack 9mm.

Arrived very quickly, Buds has always been great about shipping speed.
I received the gun, did a quick cleaning, took to range, ran several hundred rounds through with no issues at all, no FTF or FTE, used FMJ, hollow points and Tula steel case ammo, the gun ran flawlessly, great size for CC, i did add the Pierce mag extensions to help with pinky placement though, for me the grips are a little on the short size, I do have medium to large size hands, I had to adjust the sights as I was shooting a little low and to the right, which is great for a little CC weapon, you can actually adjust the sights, now the sights look like plastic so I would be careful, time will tell if they will hold up, there are other options for decent night sights, but for now the ones on it are fine.
I would recommend to friends and would buy another if I needed another CC option

So far I have 225 rounds through this Taurus PT709 Slim 9MM. I have had 100% reliability with both full-metal-jackets (FMJ) rounds and hollow-point (HP) rounds. The trigger pull is very long. This 9MM only came with one magazine. The lips on the magazine are long, which means I need to load it with a magazine loader. I carry this gun and, YES, this Taurus 9MM Slim would be a good carry or home defense pistol. At the range, I am hitting two-inch circles about 30% of the time at 22 feet. Since most defensive shooting occurs at 10 feet or less, I believe this is acceptable accuracy. Would I buy this gun again? YES.

Bud's, as usual, was very good to deal with.

This auto has about everything you can ask for in a self-defense handgun except a decent trigger. I like the LCI, double strike, good adjustable sights, thumb safety, right side only controls, no magazine disconnect[so be careful], easily concealable, light weight, fairly controllable recoil considering the size, friendly customer service and Taurus' excellent idea about quasi single action striker fired handgun. So much to like. BUT if you place your right thumb on the first joint of your index finger and move it, you will approximate the feel of the trigger just before it breaks. The take up is fine. The actual break is fine. But just before the striker releases, it is bumpy or jerky or sticky in that last tiny distance Enough so that it can make short range precision shooting a problem. More than "standard" concentration is required to accurately hit say, a one inch 10 ring at five yards. The friction in the trigger easily causes the weapon to jump ever so slightly just prior to breaking. My neighbor and my brother both have a 709 and all three feel the same. An attacker sized target should be no problem even under the influence of adrenaline and yes, this is the purpose for which it was designed. Before you buy one, make sure you dry fire one with this in mind. if you are OK with the trigger, you will not likely find another similar weapon anywhere near the bargain price of a Taurus 709 Slim. And yes, i know this is not a target shooter, but a trigger to me is critical.

If you don't have the $4-550 for a Ruger LC9s or Performance Center Shield, buy this one, learn to deal with the trigger and make it the only gun you handle.

Look for a second mag if you get one since it only comes with one
if for the wife, make sure she can rack the [ double capture spring] stiff slide. My wife cannot.

[Note] it is currently enroute back to the factory for a hairline crack in the polymer frame. I do not consider this a deal breaker. it happens to some plastic guns once in a while.

It's a little unfortunate that I can only assign one overall rating here. Bud's is a clear 5 stars, the transaction was flawless with "no headaches" choosing a FFL to work with. As well, the Norton Shopping Guarantee is really a nice benefit. It saved me a nice amount of money post purchase on this gun, so always activate it.

The gun itself I'd give a 4. It's a light, thin gun that is easy to conceal, but it has some downsides. The price cannot be beat. Simply put, it's a single stack 9 that i'm comfortable carrying that cost me well less than $300. However, upon comparison to a pricer M&P Shield, I'm not as accurate out of the box with it. I can get consistent tight grouping with my Shield, while the 709 seems to be a little more difficult to shoot accurately for me. As a right handed shooter, the slide stop and external safety does protrude a little too much and catches on my IWB holster pretty regularly. After owning it a couple of weeks, the slide stop and safety is starting to show holster wear already. Mags can be hard to find so I hear, but I did get 2 from the manufacturer right away. Aftermarket night/fiber optic sights are very limited so be aware, but finds a holster was pretty easy.

I really like the double action/double strike ability, but I've not been able to test with a live round, so it's a desperation feature only. However, that leads to an odd single action trigger pull. There is a fairly long pull with no resistance until you get an pretty immediate take-up and break in single action. I think that will take some more getting used to, but I've been able to get some good groups.

I did have some FTE failures with the first 100 or so rounds, but that seems to be gone with some breaking in and a couple of cleanings to remove the copious amount of oil it was shipped in. And I've shot about 60 rounds of Hornady Critical Defense ammo through the gun with no issue.

In summary, I think this will fit nicely as a CCW backup/alternate to my Shield and it'll be a keeper.
