Extremely impressed with this firearm. Exactly as described in the many informational YouTube videos. Of all the J-frame .357 S&W revolvers, the 640 Pro steel-framed model from the Performance Center with the tritium night sights is the one to own. I'm extremely happy with this purchase and Buds was one of the few places that had one available at an excellent price. Very happy in every respect.

Just picked up the gun today so I haven't shot it yet. Gun was in great shape, no issues and fairly clean. I know some come with the 3 finger grips and some come with the bantam grips, mine came with the latter. The night sights are worth the price increase alone, plus it's cut for moonclips. Trigger is smooth but very heavy, probably 13-15#, which is unnecessary, will probably install an Apex spring kit and hopefully get it under 10#. Also this is one of the few new Smiths that comes without the key lock, which is nice. Overall it should be a great carry gun, I just wish they would lighten the triggers up a bit on their new revolvers, they could be at least 5 or 6 pounds less and still be plenty safe for a DAO that might see pocket use. Buds delivered a great price too, as usual.

I have been wanting one of these since they first came out, and finally decided to order one as a retirement gift for myself. Without a doubt this is the best gun I have ever purchased. Buds did their usual excellent job of getting it to my FFL quickly and without issue. The exterior of the gun is amazing, and it is a great shooter. The night sights (and the sights in general) are better than most revolvers, and have been spot on for everything I have fired through it. This version does not have the internal lock, and is the only way you should purchase a revolver. This version does have larger grips than what is pictured, and that is a big plus to controlling the gun when firing +P+ or .357Mag ammunition. The trigger pull did leave a bit to be desired, so I ordered and installed the apex j-frame trigger kit, which made a huge difference. I was a bit disappointed to see three pretty significant scrape marks on the inside portion of the side-plate, which I believe were made by the internal hammer. I polished them with some mothers mag polish, and the trigger pull is now much smoother and lighter. Although this is not a 50 yard target revolver, it is more than capable of shooting really good groups at 25 yards. The gun easily shoots better than I do, and I think than most shooters could. If you see this gun come up as available at Buds, it is only because I haven't seen it first. I would definitely buy this version again.

This is my favorite J frame revolver. It comes wearing the synthetic full size grips, not the boot grips shown in the photo. I never liked having my pinky dangle anyhow. I love the Trijicon sights. They make it worth the extra expense by themselves! The cylinder cut for moonclips is very handy also. You don't have to use the clips, but why not when you can load and unload all 5 rounds in one neat package. Go to the BMT Equipped, Inc. website and get yourself a J38-5 BMT Mooner to load or unload 5 rounds of 38 Special or 357 Magnum into the moonclip in one twist of the wrist. Much quicker than the moonclip tools that do one cartridge at a time. Watch the YouTube video titled "S&W J frame moon clips". Then go to the TK Custom.com website and get a couple 10 packs of extra clips. Make sure you get the .020" thick ones if you might be using Winchester, Hornady Critical Defense, or Speer Gold Dot ammo. The BMT Mooner is $80, and the extra moonclips cost $60 for a ten pack, but after this initial expense you'll be able to burn 100 rounds at the range without spending much time reloading. You'd better stock up on ammo while you're at it. Also, this revolver doesn't have the much vilified internal lock. Buy this gun! Your friends will be jealous.
