This gun really did not work for me though it might be a great fit for you.
I was looking for a bobtail commander length 1911 to use as a carry gun and being in CA this was one of the only options. The feature list looked perfect; single side thumb safety, bobtail, no forward cocking serrations and night sights.
When it arrived I was impressed, but also somewhat concerned at the fir and finish, it is extremely tightly finished. That is a great and fine thing for a target gun but can cause reliability issues when dirt and I bought it as a carry gun. When I took it to the range I was relieved that it was generally reliable after the first couple hundred rounds, but it prints 3" to 5" high with every type of ammunition I had available, about 6 types. It also would not feed hollowpoints out of the included magazines. After a bit of experimentation I found that it would feed my usual carry ammo out of 7 round colt magazines. I contacted Dan Wesson about the point of aim/ point of impact issue but never heard back from them which was somewhat annoying. After waiting a couple months I bought a higher front sight to bring the sights onto target and started carrying it. I shortly noticed a couple other issues, first it is noticeably heavier than my other commander length 1911 (a colt xse), I am not sure why. The other thing I noticed is that this gun rusts really easily, once again I am comparing it to my old colt. I think the reason is that it uses tool steel parts and has a fair amount of carbon in the Stainless. That is a great thing for durability but not so great for corrosion resistance. Tiring of needing to detail strip my gun, carefully polish off the rust on internal parts, and re-assemble after coating with rust preventative every week or two I have switched back to my previous carry gun.
The bobtail was a mixed bag, it helped with concealment a lot but I felt it cost me control more than I would have expected. That is purely preference of how it fit my hand, some people love them.
Conclusion, if you are looking for a very tightly fitted bobtail commander with good tool steel parts this is a great option. As a carry gun I can't recommend it and after having no response from Dan Wesson over the issue with the sights I am not so sure about their customer service.

No pun intended when I say another classic 1911 pistol form CZ/Dan Wesson. You must be into S.S. pistols or you wouldn't be looking at this handsome dual finish stainless 1911. Fit and finish are excellent and on a par with the custom 1911 builders. In 45ACP with cocobolo wood gripes, no front cocking serrations, plain round top of slide, single right hand safety and bobtail frame all speak to the modern classic look. The POA and POI are spot on. The trigger pull is a short crisp 4lbs-6oz. as measured on my Lyman gauge. I've put about 500 rounds of 230gr. Remington and Magtech FMJ ammo down range without a single hitch. I have the good fortune to be able to compare my new D.W. Classic bobtail with my 7yr. old Ed Brown Kobra Carry bobtail. The D.W. Classic bobtail is an all around excellent pistol and I look forward to many years of dependable service and fun shooting. If money is no object get the Ed Brown to feel the differences for yourself.

The Commander Classic bobtail was shipped promptly from Bud's all as advertised. After field stripping and a minor lube, took it to my local gun range with the 2 supplied DW magazines. Neither magazine will not seat when loaded with 8 rounds but do so with 7. There was complete failure to feed with the first loaded magazine. Simply would not feed and seat a round. Changed to a different brand of ammunition and fired 50 rounds using both DW magazines. There were 4 - 5 failures to feed from that box.Took the gun home, again field stripped, cleaned and lubed it. Went out again but took a Chip McCormick and a Kimber magazines in addition to those from DW. With the DW magazines there was consistent stove piping with the last round, every time. One single round loaded into a magazine will not feed. There were no similar problems with the 2 other magazines over 100 rounds. All ammunition used has been 230 gr. FMJ. The gun is a real pleasure to shoot and very accurate. The piece is extremely well made. When I twice wrote DW about the problems with the DW magazines, I received prompt responses. Solution for not seating fully loaded DW magazines was to leave them loaded for a couple of weeks to break them in. Have initiated that process. Problems with failure to feed and stove piping were not adequately addressed in my opinion. Similar problems with other new semiautomatic pistols I have not encountered. If not for the problems with the DW magazines and the company response, I would rate this firearm a 5 star. Bud's is a 5 star in terms of ease of ordering and service.

The Dan Wesson Classic Commander Bobtail is just that,a Classic! This version of the 1911 is a testament to John Browning's great design that served the US military for 75 years. It's reliable, accurate and well made. It has the quality of a custom 1911 at a much lower price point!
