Let me start off by saying, i had VERY low expectations for this pistol. I bought with the intention of replacing just about everything with wilson combat internals an a kimber ultra recoil assembly.
What i\'ve done to the pistol (Or had done to be exact)
Throated/polished chamber/feedramps, Wilson combat hammer, STi trigger, and a crisp 3.5# trigger job. All work was done by an expert NRA gunsmith, i cant praise his work enough. He was actually a light bit surprised on the fitment of this gun. Sure it was rough in some places but the barrel was fit decently and the slide/frame was tight.
Next i will mention how much use this gun has gotten,
About 150 rounds of reloads (Wadcutter w/4.0 of bullseye if i recall correctly ) i had 3 malfunctions, FTE\'s in two seperate instances and one of the two FTE\'s prevented a round from being chambered. (for a total of 3 failures) Considering the nature of a less than factory length pistol, and the knowledge that the spring is doing ALOT of work, combined with shooting lighter than normal loads. I am impressed already.
Everyone claims and suggests you must replace the recoil assembly immediately or it will fail and damage then gun etc etc. Mine shows ZERO sign of wear and NO damage to the gun after 150 rounds.
I am 90% certain that when i come back to the range with factory typical powered loads i will have little to NO malfunctions. Which is something a colt defender or kimber ultra cannot claim out of the box. (Before a costly 500 round break in period) Hell, who knows maybe it will fall apart the next round i put through it. But logic tells me it wont.
All in all i have about 600 bucks in this gun (a good chunk of that is VZ Grips and trigger work) and i consider it to be a good shooter for the money.
Few gripes - Grips were garbage. Terrible. Cheesy. Already had plans on changing to VZ Slants to match my kimber.
The hammer was hideous, i opted replacing it..also to match my fullsize kimber.
The sights, my gunsmith was impressed with how CENTERED they got the sights, quite good work and they were dead on out of the box.
BUT, the front sight post is not cut flat on the topside, its very obviously slanted horizontally at the top, this bothers the hell out of my so tritiums are liking to be coming soon.
For $400 bucks or so this is a steal, they must have changed the recoil assembly design recently because everything i read mentioned them failing within 100 rounds or at least showing signs of degrading. None in my experience.
Buds had it here in 3 days.
