First of all, service from Bud's was first rate, as always. Now on to the rifle. This is my third Core M4 Scout, the other two going to family members, so I pretty much knew what to expect. I was not disappointed. This is exactly what it seems to be, a good, entry level AR-15 style carbine. But several things set it apart from other rifles in its price range. Aside from having a non-chrome lined barrel with a 1:9 twist, this is a completely "Mil-Spec" rifle. CORE has apparently decided to save on production costs by providing a barrel designed more for sporting use than for military applications. The lack of chrome lining should not concern the average shooter at all provided they are not planning to take this rifle into a jungle warfare situation. In fact, all three of the Scouts I've tested, including this one, shoot slightly tighter groups than my chrome-lined Colt LE6920. This may simply be a function of the fact that all three of the CORE rifles have better triggers than my Colt. If the barrel twist or lining is a concern for you, all you need to do is order the CORE M4 Rifle (not the Scout) and you will get the same gun with an upgraded barrel, 1:7 chrome lined for about $100 more. The 1:9 twist of the Scout is perfect for the 55 grain bullets most shooters use, and this rifle fires quite well with the 62 grain Gold Dots I use for defense. Where I find this CORE to be different from other entry-level rifles in the same price range is that the others hit their price point by an overall cheapening of the construction, lower quality barrel steel, or a mixture of mil-spec and commercial parts. Some provide cheap hand guards with no heat shields or non-standard triggers, but not this CORE. It is good to go right out of the box. Having said that, with this $504 rifle, you do not get a set of backup iron sights and you may well get them with other budget rifles. So it is your call. One thing I did not like about this package that has been an issue with two of the three CORE Scouts I bought is the supplied magazine, which is a Hex Mag rather than the industry standard PMAG. The supplied Hex magazine works great in my other AR's but for some reason won't stay locked all the time in two of the Scouts. The CORE rifles seem to work great with PMAGs, Lancers, and USGI metal magazines, just not the rifle they came with. You may or may not experience this problem. By the way, when I informed CORE of this, they bent over backwards to try to fix it, sending me replacement parts twice and offered me a pickup tag to send the rifle in. Since I have standardized on PMAGs and they worked great, I didn't bother. The last thing I'd like to mention is that for some reason, the Scouts with OD Green furniture and the one with FDE furniture are significantly cheaper than the same model in black. Go figure. I bought this green one and used the difference for a Magpul flip up BUIS and some extra magazines. The dark green furniture is quite attractive and makes it easy to tell your rifle from all the black ones at the range. I have named this one "Kermit", who famously said, "It ain't easy being green." I really like this rifle and it compares very favorably with my Colt which cost almost twice as much. Before I retired, I was a police patrol rifle instructor and can highly recommend this as my favorite entry-level AR.

I now own four Core 15 Scouts. With an average price of $475 they can't be beat. Well made, reliable, functions well with all ammo. I love them. Buds always has the best price.

I can't provide a full review at this time. I took this gun to the range over the weekend but I was having issues firing it. Seems to be an issue the the trigger mechanism. I am planning on taking it back to the range soon to see if I can figure out what the problem is exactly.

Just picked up this rifle today and I was caught by surprise when I found out it had a 1:7 twist vs. the advertised 1:9. No big deal. It just diversifies my collection. Overall, the looks are good and there are no rattling or loose fitting parts. I can't review on performance because I haven't shot it yet but I'm sure it will function properly. Seems like a well made base AR.
