Just bought a new H&R .444 Marlin single shot. It arrived, full of dust from the shipping box. No big deal, but when I cleaned the dust from the bore, I discovered that the rifling for the first few inches in front of the chamber had no twist, just straight grooves. Then it looked normal through the middle, and the straight grooves resumed for the last few inches leading to the muzzle. It also appeared rough, like it had tool marks or chatter marks from machining. I contacted H&R, and their service department arranged to have the rifle picked up by UPS and returned for repair. We'll see how that goes, I hope they make it right.
